The RMS Titanic. :

By Tayler Chambers The RMS Titanic.

Building A Legend :

Building A Legend The Titanic was built in Belfast and was designed by Lord Pirrie and Thomas Andrews. It was built to be one of the most luxurious and high class ships of its time. The cost of one night on first class was $4,350 USD. Which is equal to around $95,860 USD now.

Building Begins. :

Building Begins. They started the construction of the Titanic on March 31th , 1909. She was 882 ft and 9in long. She had 840 rooms and was able to carry 3,547 passengers and crew.

Costs of building. :

Costs of building. It cost $7.5 million to build the Titanic. Although the movie about the Titanic cost $200 million to make. Today it would cost over $400 million to build the Titanic.

An Unsinkable Ship :

An Unsinkable Ship The Titanic was known as the unsinkable ship. The Captain himself believed that the ship could be cut and half and still float. The owners of the Titanic afterward claimed they didn’t advertise the ship as “unsinkable” but many passengers stated in diaries and interviews they believed the ship to be unsinkable as well.

The Mistake. :

The Mistake. Legally in the early 1900’s a ship only had to carry 16 lifeboats. Since no ships had been made big enough to need more. The Titanic did carry more than legal minimum. They carried 20 lifeboats on board. Even with 20 boats they still only had enough to carry about 1/3rd of the passengers and crew on board.

Tragedy strikes. :

Tragedy strikes. On April 14th , 1912, the Titanic was warned about an iceberg possibly being in its way. The iceberg hit the Titanic’s right side and water started flooding into the ship. The ship was able to stay afloat with 4 compartments flooded with water. Unfortunately 5 were flooded before the ship finally sank at 2 AM April 15th.

Loss of life :

Loss of life 1,517 people died in the sinking of the titanic including the Captain. Overall that means that only %31.8 survived. Most of the deaths were caused by hypothermia due to the water being 28 degrees F. The expected time of death in those conditions was about 15 minutes.

A little more about the Captain :

A little more about the Captain Captain Edward John Smith was born January 27th , 1850. He started sailing for the White Star Line in March of 1880. He had a reputation of one of the worlds most experienced sea captains. Captain Smith planned on retiring after the Titanic’s maiden voyage. The voyage started on April 9th , 1912. When the Titanic sank April 14th , 1912, Captain Smith was obligated to go down with the sinking ship because he wasn’t allowed to leave until everyone else safely got off. He died April 15th, 1912, around 2AM in the morning on the bridge of the ship.

Myth of a mummy curse. :

Myth of a mummy curse. The mummy of Egyptian Princess Amen-Ra traveled along the Titanic on its way to a museum in New York. A lot of rumors spread the first couple days after the Titanic sank. Some believe that the mummy was never meant to be moved and cursed the Titanic and that’s why it sank. Others believe that the Titanic sinking was just an unfortunate coincidence. Why exactly the Titanic sank, whether it was curse or just bad timing, we may never know.
