Taustaa: Taustaa Pitkäaikaissairaiden potilaiden määrä lisääntyy voimakkaasti koko maailmassa Ongelmana potilaiden huono hoitoon sitoutuminen Suomessa vain 10 prosentilla aikuistyypin diabeetikoista on hyvä hoitotasapaino (VTT teknologian tutkimuksen ryhmä 2001) Terveydenhuollon ja yhteiskunnan kustannukset kasvavat voimakkaasti pitkäaikaissairauksien osuus on n. 75 % terveydenhoidon kustannuksista


Diabetes Suomessa: Diabetes Suomessa Aikaisemmat luvut ja ennusteet 2004 diabeetikoiden osuus väestöstä on 3-4 % (noin 220 000) (Dehko 2000-2010) noin 50 000 sairaudesta tietämätöntä tyypin 2 diabeetikkoa (Reunanen A. 2004) vuonna 2010 → noin 300 000 diabeetikkoa (Reunanen A. 2004). hoitoon kuluu 11-12 % terveydenhuollon kokonaiskustannuksista (Dehko 2000-2010) Peltonen M, Korpi-Hyövälti E, Oksa 2006 diabeteksen kokonaisesiintyvyys miehillä 16 % ja naisilla 11 % jopa 200 000 suomalaista sairastaa tyypin 2 diabetesta tietämättään arvio 700000 , miehillä n. 400000, naisilla n. 300000. hoidon kokonaiskustannukset?
