Update on network activities: Update on network activities Addis Ababa 2003- following priority areas were identified: - For the development of national PGR programmes awareness raising is a key to the process and needed at all levels and sectors - New roles for genebanks includes documentation of indigenous knowledge, technical support to informal seed systems, germplasm enhancement (base broadening), communicating the needs of local communities to policy makers, promote utilisation - Farmers should be seen as the central actors in maintaining the diversity in farmer's fields - Inter-regional interaction was considered very fruitful Regional proposals for a standard MTA - Establishment of a regional genebank or other mechanisms for sharing of responsibilities

Update on network activities: Update on network activities Ljubljana, Slovenia- 2005 Agenda of the meeting - Update on Inter-regional … network activities - Information from West and Central Africa - Further development and extending the cooperation - Areas of collaboration - Cooperation with other bodies - Activity and work plan for Phase VII - Network budget for Phase VII

Update on network activities: Update on network activities Ljubljana, Slovenia- 2005 Information from West and Central Africa Raymond Vodouhe informed about regional meetings and proposed strategy for African region: - The principal idea is to establish Nodal Centres of Excellence which will play a leading role in the conservation of PGR in the region. - CORAF on behalf of GRENEWECA is thought to act as umbrella institute for the Centres. - Presently a consultant is engaged with financial support from the Global Crop Diversity Trust (GCDT) in order to assess and identify possible institutions in the region which could host the Nodal Centres. It is anticipated that the Nodal Centres could be selected and set in operation already at the end of 2005. Areas of importance for further collaboration with ECP/GR. Documentation, training, development of GR policies at national as well as institutional levels.

Further development and extending the cooperation: Further development and extending the cooperation - The contacts could be established and collaboration could be initiated with the CWANA and Central Asian and Trans Caucasian networks. The group came to the conclusion that it would be difficult to make a plan for cooperation with other regions without knowing the actual present situation. For the time being it was seen as most relevant to identify some key institutions and persons within the networks and to find future meeting opportunities during which information exchange could precede a common strategy for collaboration. All future collaboration and initiatives for joint activities should add value to already on-going work in partner networks.

Areas of collaboration: Areas of collaboration - Focus on the previously proposed areas for the continued collaboration with other regions; information and documentation, training, policy implementation, and conservation. - Due to minor amount of financial resources for network activities it was pointed out that the Inter-regional Cooperation Network Coordinating Group could only have a facilitating function through which other ECP/GR networks and working groups could be informed about interest and need for collaboration from other regions. The regional network coordinators were considered as the key persons in this context and to establish regular information channels would be a first step towards an increased collaboration and stronger partnership. The group therefore agreed that the available funds allocated for the Inter-regional Network could be of best use if spent on key persons participation in relevant meetings. Information which could be shared on a regular basis could be notification of workshops and training opportunities within the identified areas of collaboration.

Cooperation with other bodies: Cooperation with other bodies Promote and strengthen links to other international, regional and national initiatives - Mutual information and links with GCDT - AEGIS, dissemination of information - EURISCO, already involved. It was suggested that the ECP/GR secretariat raises the issue of further training in relation to EURISCO and in collaboration with other regions with the ECP/GR Information and Documentation Network Coordination Group. A link for information exchange could also be established between the EURISCO database manager and the IPGRI-SSA office. - Invite key persons from other regional networks to future workshop on the National Programmes on PGR (follow up to Alnarp)
