Day 6 10 minute Writing :

Day 6 10 minute Writing http://www.online-stopwatch.com Situation: Many people believe that it is dangerous to talk on a phone while driving a car. The state legislators are considering making it against the law for people to use a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle. Directions: Think about how you feel about people talking on a cell phone while driving a car. Now write to convince your state legislators to accept your view about whether or not to make it against the law to talk on a phone while driving.

Example of draft:

Example of draft I don’t think talking on the phone is dangerous. It is more dangerous to be texting because when you text your eyes on the phone not the road. So, I think it should be against the law for cell phones to be used for texting but not driving. People talking on phones is not any different than talking to other people in the car. If they are worried about their hands being free then it is not any different than their hands being busy eating french fries or drinking a coffee. So, I guess it is a matter of why they think it is dangerous. I also wonder how they will be able to enforce this? If they see you talking on the phone you can get pulled over and given a ticket? Or do you have to be driving bad in the first place and then get pulled over and see that you have a phone you can get an extra ticket?

Day 6 REVISION: Stay Focused & Support :

Day 6 REVISION: Stay Focused & Support http://www.online-stopwatch.com Look at your draft from today. Reread the paper and circle or note the best idea(s) HOW does each idea support the TOPIC? If it does not provide much support related to the topic cross it out Find your best idea(s) that supports the topic. Now add more support to one idea. Ask..Who? Where? When? What? How? Why? Can you connect something PERSONAL to this support?

Or do you have to be driving bad in the first place and then get pulled over and see that you have a phone you can get an extra ticket? ADD DETAIL/SUPPORT My mom has been driving for 25 years and has never had an accident. Many of these years she spent with four small kids in the car at a time. She can deliver bottles, pacifiers, happy meals and DVD’s to the backseat with one hand while the other keeps the car steady on the road. If she can manage to do that, like many mothers do, it hardly seems like a phone shouldn’t be much more dangerous.

Day 7 10 minute Writing :

Day 7 10 minute Writing http://www.online-stopwatch.com Situation: A school board is considering keeping school in session all year. Instead of a long summer vacation, there will be many shorter breaks throughout the year . Directions: Think about the effects of a twelve-month school year. Do you agree or disagree that schools should be in session all year? Now , write an essay in which you persuade the reader why this is or is not a good idea. Defend your position with specific reasons supported by several detailed examples.

Directions: Think about the effects of a twelve-month school year. Do you agree or disagree that schools should be in session all year? Now , write an essay in which you persuade the reader why this is or is not a good idea. Defend your position with specific reasons supported by several detailed examples. Having school all year long is a bad idea. There are lots of reasons why. Families take vacations in summer. It would cost the school a lot more money since they would have to keep the school air conditioning on and busses running and teachers getting paid more. If your family wanted to take a vacation to meet family, they might not have the same schedule in another part of the country or state. Kids would hate it. Students look forward to the summer more than anything else. They would be so upset if they could not have a summer vacation or if their summer vacation was cut short. What about sports? The shorter breaks will make it harder for students to stay focused because they will always be looking forward to the next time off.

Directions: Think about the possible effects of cutting sports from the school program. Decide whether you are for or against this proposal. Now write an essay in which you persuade the reader why this is or is not a good idea. Defend your position with specific reasons supported by several detailed examples.

Day 8 Revision: A Closer Look at My Writing:

Day 8 Revision: A Closer Look at My Writing Number the sentences in your draft. Then complete this chart accordingly. Note your key verbs and nouns. (Ideas, support, and word choice) Improve 2 verbs and 2 nouns minimum. Note the length of sentences and the first four words. (Fluency) Revise to improve all areas.

Day 9 15 minute Writing :

Day 9 15 minute Writing http://www.online-stopwatch.com Situation : Your school has a program in which a tenth grader mentors a ninth grader at the beginning of each school year. The mentor's job is to help the ninth grader have a successful experience at your school. The ninth grader you are working with is worried about being able to write well enough for high school classes. Directions : As you plan your response, think about your own writing experiences. How would you describe "good" writing? What advice about writing has been helpful to you? What writing techniques do you use? Now write a letter to your ninth grader explaining what kind of writing is expected in high school classes and what the student can do to be a successful writer in high school.
