Civics Vocabulary: 

Civics Vocabulary 7 th Grade – Government Terms

DEMOCRACY: 

DEMOCRACY A form of government where power is held by the people, where the people elect leaders and rule by majority, or they elect representatives to vote for them.

Parliamentary Democracy: 

Parliamentary Democracy Democratic form of government where the political party with the greatest representation in the parliament forms the government. Its leader becomes Prime Minister.

Presidential Democracy: 

Presidential Democracy Democratic form of government where the head of government is directly elected and chooses government leaders.

THEOCRACY: 

THEOCRACY A form of government where God is recognized as the supreme ruler, but government laws are decided by religious leaders based on what God ‘would want’.

MONARCHY: 

MONARCHY Form of government where a monarch has supreme power, usually for life, and usually by birth into the right family.

REPUBLIC: 

REPUBLIC Form of government where power is in a constitution, with the goal of protecting citizens’ rights. The people’s elected representatives vote for them.

ISLAMIC REPUBLIC: 

ISLAMIC REPUBLIC Theocratic government ruled by Islamic beliefs and laws, with some voting power in the hands of the citizens.

DICTATORSHIP: 

DICTATORSHIP Form of government where power is in the hands of one person who has complete control of all government decisions. Power is usually gained or kept with force.

COMMUNISM: 

COMMUNISM Form of government where government owns all businesses and makes all economic decisions.
