Healthcare costs. Strategy and Power : Strategy and Power Slide 4: Use the political system to turn personal power in organizational power. Recognize the self-interest of others in the organization and use them in a win-win manner. Diagnose, plan, and execute an effective political campaign to achieve a thoughtful, purposeful goal. Define ways to achieve objectives while helping others. Know people and their goals. Slide 5: Disengage from losing issues and from issues in which you have to defend yourself on someone else’s turf. Defend your territory. Plan and carry out an offense on issues of your own choosing and commitment. Build coalitions. Exploit opportunities, using situations to your advantage. Go after winning issues. Set up situations to benefit persons who can benefit you. Then deliver the goods at a cost-effective price. WHAT IS A COALITION ? : WHAT IS A COALITION ? Slide 7: A coalition is a union of people and organizations working to influence outcomes on a specific problem Coalitions are useful for accomplishing a broad range of goals that reach beyond the capacity of any individual member organization. These goals range from information sharing to coordination of services, from community education to advocacy for major environmental or policy changes ADVANTAGES OF COALITIONS : ADVANTAGES OF COALITIONS Slide 9: Coalitions can conserve resources and achieve more widespread reach within a community. Coalitions have greater credibility and can accomplish objectives beyond the scope of any single organization. Coalitions provide a forum for sharing information while providing advice and perspectives to the lead agency. Coalitions foster personal satisfaction and help members to understand their jobs in a broader perspective. Coalitions can foster cooperation between grassroots organizations, community members, and/or diverse sectors of a large organization. Coalitions build trust and consensus between people and organizations. EIGHT STEPS TO BUILDINGAN EFFECTIVE COALITION : EIGHT STEPS TO BUILDINGAN EFFECTIVE COALITION Slide 12: Your client is the administrator of a private 150 bed not-for-profit hospital in Northern Virginia. Services at the hospital have been consistent with a slow growth rate for several years. A competing for-profit chain wants to build an ambulatory surgery center one mile down the street from your facility.
