What Is Autism? :

What Is Autism? Autism is known as a developmental disability. Doctors believe that Autism is noticeable during the first three years of a person's life. The condition is the result of a neurological disorder that effects brain function, affecting development of the person's communication and social interaction skills. -

Symptoms.. :

Symptoms.. Some autistic kids have difficulties in: *Social Interactions with others. *Verbal and Non-Verbal communication. *Pretend play. Note: The symptoms can be different according to how severe the autism is.

Causes :

Causes Autism is a physical condition linked to the brain. The causes of these abnormalities remain unknown. There are probably a combination of factors that lead to autism, genetic factors seem to be important. Other possible causes have been suspected, but not proven. They involve: Diet Digestive tract changes Mercury poisoning The body's inability to properly use vitamins and minerals Vaccine sensitivity Note: Autism affects boys 3 - 4 times more often than girls.

Information.. :

Information.. Most parents begin to realize something is wrong by the time the child is about 18 months old. But don’t go for help till the child is around 2. Also, some children seem to be normal before the age of 1 and then suddenly begin to lose language or social skills they had before. People with Autism may: * Be overly sensitive in sight, hearing, touch, smell, or taste *Get mad when routines are changed *Repeat certain body movements. *Get attached to specific objects.

Trisomy 21 a.k.a.Down Syndrome :

Trisomy 21 a.k.a.Down Syndrome

What Is Down Syndrome? :

What Is Down Syndrome? Down syndrome is set of mental and physical symptoms that result from having an extra copy of Chromosome 21. Normally, a fertilized egg has 23 pairs of chromosomes. In most people with Down syndrome, there is an extra copy of Chromosome 21, which changes the body’s and brain’s normal development.

Causes :

Causes The causes of Down syndrome are genetic problems related to chromosome 21. Down syndrome is not inherited; it does not "run in families." Down syndrome is usually the result of a random event that occurs during the formation of reproductive cells (eggs and sperm). One exception is Down syndrome caused by a balanced translocation. As far as we know, Down syndrome is not caused by any behavioral activity of the parents.

Signs Of Down Syndrome :

Signs Of Down Syndrome Flat face with an upward slant to the eye, short neck, and abnormally shaped ears. Deep crease in the palm of the hand White spots on the iris of the eye Poor muscle tone, loose ligaments Small hands and feet

Health Conditions :

Health Conditions Congenital heart disease (Congenital heart disease refers to a problem with the heart's structure and function due to abnormal heart development before birth. It means present at birth.) Hearing problems Celiac disease (Celiac disease is an inherited, autoimmune disease in which the lining of the small intestine is damaged from eating gluten and other proteins found in wheat, barley, rye, and possibly oats.) –Cause is unknown. Eye problems Thyroid dysfunctions (This gland plays a very important role in controlling your body's metabolism, that is, the rate at which your body uses energy.) Skeletal problems Dementia (Dementia is a loss of brain function that occurs with certain diseases. It affects memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior)

What is the treatment for Down syndrome? :

What is the treatment for Down syndrome? Down syndrome is not a condition that can be cured. However, early intervention can help many people with down syndrome live productive lives well into adulthood. Children with Down syndrome can often benefit from speech therapy, occupational therapy, and exercises for gross and fine motor skills. They might also be helped by special education and attention at school. For Example: Best Buddies 

End The “R” WordCampaign :

End The “R” WordCampaign The “r” Word Some people have “mental retardation”(intellectual disabilities). While mental retardation is not a bad word.. When you use to describe someone or something you think is bad or stupid it becomes another thoughtless hurtful word. People with intellectual disabilities are not bad, their condition is not bad. The discrimination to people with intellectual disabilities is BAD…and WRONG! Please stop using the word ‘retard’. It hurts individuals and families of those with disabilities.
