Holcim Project: Holcim Project David R. Munoz, Ph.D.
Interim Director and Associate Professor
Engineering Division
Need: Need To convert 200,000 tons (per year) of pulverized coal combustion to various alternative fuels in the rotary kiln at the Holcim Portland Plant.
Alternative Fuels: Alternative Fuels Shredded Tires.
Shredded Carton Wastes (from large entities i.e. DIA, hospitals, malls, etc.).
Chipped wood (forest refuse).
Potentially bio-hazardous materials.
The Rotary Kiln Parameters: The Rotary Kiln Parameters 10 feet diameter, 400 feet long, rotating cylinder.
Counter-flow heat exchanger.
Combustion of fuel occurs at one end (T1=2200oC), cement product enters the other end after a preheating process (T2=1000oC).
Product is heated to form clinkers with the desired chemical composition.
Combustion exhaust goes to the stack, product goes to cooling and grinding process.

Design Goals: Design Goals Develop a system to
accept various solid alternative fuels,
Shred the fuels,
Homogenize the fuels, and
Transport the mixture to the rotary kiln for combustion.
Challenging Factors: Challenging Factors Large volumes: ~60,000 tons of each fuel per year,
Transportation concerns to a remote location (Florence, CO, 35 miles south of Colorado Springs near highways 50 and 115),
Utilization of existing 50,000 ft2 building for the materials handling operation,
Strong environmental sensitivity.
