and The objectives of a specific program have an effect on its corePrinciples: cultural diversity: Principles: cultural diversity The aims of a specific program and the cultural and economical environment wherein it operates play a legitimate role in goal setting and hence in accreditation Diversity of aims and cultures cannot be used to justify violation of human rights of members or prospective members of the learning communityPrinciples: local control: Principles: local control Accreditation should be controlled and administered locally Long term solutions based on accreditation by evaluators from other cultures/environments/countries are undesirable Participation of evaluators from other cultures/environments/countries in locally dominated teams is desirable Outline: Outline Accreditation in IEEE (general) Principles of operation Objective 1: information Objective 2: education Objective 3: organization Hiring a consultant Activities in China, Japan, Peru, the West Indies 2007 Global Accreditation WorkshopObjective 1: serving as the first resource of choice on accreditation: Objective 1: serving as the first resource of choice on accreditation Using on-line portals to collect and present comprehensive information about accreditationSlide20: IEEE is creating a database of all major accrediting bodies worldwide And the program they have accredited Will become part of tryengineering.org IEEE is creating a database of all mutual recognition agreements around the world To be used as a planning tool for expansion and increasing the signatory groupSlide21: IEEE is working on inventory of the main approaches to accreditation worldwide With the intent of working on an IEEE white paper on accreditation IEEE develops model curricula So far, Computer Engineering and Software Engineering Next, Biomedical Engineering and Systems EngineeringOutline: Outline Accreditation in IEEE (general) Principles of operation Objective 1: information Objective 2: education Objective 3: organization Hiring a consultant Activities in China, Japan, Peru, the West Indies 2007 Global Accreditation WorkshopObjective 2: conduct educational workshops on accreditation: Objective 2: conduct educational workshops on accreditation Objectives of IEEE accreditation workshops (six conducted so far): Objectives of IEEE accreditation workshops (six conducted so far) To host in-depth discussions of accreditation systems and trends in different countries To exchange information about local practices, emerging needs, and possible accreditation opportunities To describe existing accreditation systems in different countries; Gaining increasing recognition both inside and outside Peru Local IEEE Peru Section members are leading ICACIT Assistance is provided by IEEE members from the U.S. and Canada Written material, workshops, participation in visits, invitations ot visits in the US and Canada IEEE seeks to replicate the ICACIT model in other countries where new accrediting bodies are needed or are being formed Outline: Outline Accreditation in IEEE (general) Principles of operation Objective 1: information Objective 2: education Objective 3: organization Hiring a consultant Activities in China, Japan, Peru, the West Indies 2007 Global Accreditation WorkshopProfessional assistance…: Professional assistance… We are negotiating a contract with Carole Mablekos an educator from Philadelphia, PA Expected July 15 2006 We already have Joanne Van Voorhis under contract For development of database of all major accrediting bodies and agreements worldwide Will be appended to tryengineering.org Principal activities under contract: Principal activities under contract Investigation of collaboration and participation opportunities of IEEE in international accrediting bodies. Investigation of collaboration and participation opportunities of IEEE in international mutual recognition agreements (for educational credentials and academic degrees). Investigation of opportunities for IEEE to participate in the formation of new accrediting bodies and in the formation of new mutual recognition agreements (for educational credentials and academic degrees). Development of a white paper describing IEEE’s guidelines on accreditation. Methods for 1-3: Methods for 1-3 JVV will supply CB with a list of existing target accrediting bodies + major mutual recognition agreements + bodies engaged in creation and ratification of such agreements Additional information will be gathered from interviews and literature/internet search CB will review the list and develop a preliminary prioritization, followed by governance research and interviews Promising leads will be followed - for negotiation of IEEE participation Methods for 4.
