This WebQuest sounds like fun! I am interested to know what your students will think of it and what they come up with. Great job! By Guisselle

That sounds like a blast. I would love to go on the one you design, especially if it crashes into the water like the picture.

Slide 1:

Roller Coasters: It’s More Fun to Build Them! Designed by Mr. Spellmire exclusively for AP Calculus tspellmire@materdei.org

Introduction :

Introduction Have you ever wondered what goes into the planning, strategizing, contracting, and construction of your favorite amusement park ride? If you have, you’re in luck! For this project you will have the distinct honor of planning, contracting, and constructing your idea roller coaster. Remember, the most fun and entertaining roller coasters come from the minds of people with great imaginations. They ask, “why not” instead of saying “we can’t do that”.

Task :

Task For this WebQuest, you will be broken up into groups of no more than 3 people. You may work by yourself if you wish to do so. Within your groups, you will be responsible for the actual design (and calculations associated with certain aspects of the ride), the budget for the construction (money doesn’t grow on trees), and finally the actual building of your dream ride.

Process :

Process You will be placed in groups of at most 3 individuals to be chosen by the teacher (or you may choose to work by yourself); this will be your research/development/construction team. Each person must be included in every aspect of the project. Your group should begin with designing your rollercoaster. Be sure to use accurate calculations for the velocity and acceleration at important junctures (i.e. the initial drop, any “upside-down” sections, as well as major curves in the track). Feel free to utilize any resources you deem relevant, but be sure to check with the teacher if you have any questions. Examples and more information on this will follow shortly.

Evaluation :

Evaluation A completed rubric will be placed here.

Conclusion :

Conclusion At the completion of this project, you will (hopefully) have a new sense of wonder and amazement with relation to all the work that goes into a minute-long joy ride. You will also gain a new respect for the people that work “behind the scenes” and see the importance of accuracy in doing their job.
