The majority of these homes (as much as 72 percent) were built before the adoption of modern energy codes in home construction in the late 1980s. (Energy codes impose minimum requirements for energy efficiency upon builders.) These are our “Ford Pintos.” Old homes, of course, can be renovated to achieve more modern standards, but in most cases they are not. It is estimated that 60 percent of our residences possess inadequate levels of insulation.2

How the score works…: 

How the score works… The Home Energy Score requires a simple walk-through by a qualified assessor, noting 40-50 separate data points critical to energy performance . These data points are then fed into a software package that subsequently determines the home ranking. The walk-through is designed to be quick and inexpensive for the homeowner, but nonetheless valid.

Facts Real estate markets are essentially local, and it makes sense to begin at local levels and build outward. Some cities will embrace the label and incorporate it. The Home energy Score will increase a home’s resale value, then the message will spread far and wide. A green premium in one community does not mean a green premium in all. The French researcher Francoise Bartiaux has asserted that understanding and accepting home energy labels is a process that must be “socially learned” over time . The miles-per-gallon sticker on a car, for example, was not immediately understood when it first appeared some 35 years ago . We must educate communities, and homeowners.

The Scoring Tool is a free internet based software program, available for use by Home Energy Score Qualified Assessors. I pad and iPhone app will be available in the next 30 - 45 days.

SCORE!: 

Assessor ID : Each Home is given a unique ID, which is used in the financing process and Quality Assurance process. SCORE! The Score with Improvements assumes all recommendations will be implemented. The 10 year savings estimate reflects the gross savings associated with the improvements (i.e., a reduction in utility bills). The Top 20% indicator allows the homeowner to see how the top energy-performing large or small homes in their area score. Assessment date: T he date that the in-home assessment was performed.

Assessor’s benefit the homeowner: The homeowners receive: An online rebate system they can use for products specifically targeted to their zip code An emailed estimate for upgrades that you prepare upon the completion of the Home Energy Score - required within 3 business days The recommended upgrades, listed on page 5 of the Home Energy Score report Page 5 lists all utility savings with upgrades. The Score lists items for retrofit, requiring an estimate from the H ESQA or their company contact within 3 business days. If the HESQA does not do upgrades, then a third party can issue the retrofit estimate on their behalf.

Retrofits Spirit Foundation requires all contractors to be RESNET ENERGYSMART certified. If you do not do retrofits, the retrofits are completed by an Energy Smart Contractor. You are paid a fee for each retrofit (prior to starting), and the estimate and process is handled for you.

So, you want to be a “HESQA”: 

So, you want to be a “HESQA” Provide Spirit Foundation your with your contact information and certification documentation. (BPI Analyst or RESNET Rater) Background check is required by all Home Energy Score Qualified Assessors Spirit Foundation will provide the DOE the information for testing and certification to complete scores for Spirit. Complete online training. Spirit Foundation requires all assessors to complete the online Home Energy Score Qualified Assessor course through the University of Missouri-Extension. Receive a passing grade on the two Home Energy Score proctored tests. Candidates are allowed no more than 3 attempts at each test.

University of Missouri : 

University of Missouri The University of Missouri – Extension courses were developed by external subject matter experts, PHD’s at the Center for Sustainable Energy, instructional design experts and others. These courses will assist you in certification, and passing the DOE proctored exam.

Spirit Home Energy Score Qualified Assessor Process: 

Spirit Home Energy Score Qualified Assessor Process Prior to taking the DOE proctored exam, you are considered a candidate . Spirit Foundation will require each candidate’s BPI or RESNET certification and will verify it is active, and all CUE’s are up to date. If you are not BPI certified, we have a course available at MU to assist you. Spirit Foundation will also require copies of insurance and business license. Upon submitting registration with Spirit Foundation, verification of certification, and copies of insurance and business license, the candidate will receive the “Getting Started” Assessors package. The candidate will log in to the UM website and review all pre-test training modules. Spirit Foundation will create an Open ID for the candidate, complete all forms, and provide these materials to the DOE. The candidate will show up for a one-hour test review and proctored exam at a specific location in your community.

Option 1:: 

Option 1: If you are a current BPI Analyst or RESNET Rater then you can take the proctored test, pass the test, and begin scoring homes. The cost of the proctored exam is $100.00 Once you register for the exam, and pass, you have access to dowloadable marketing materials, with your company logo on them. This does not include marketing, only a HESQA badge and PDF’s.

This course will assist you in passing the DOE proctored exam, performing scores accurately, The proctored exam costs are included in the course fee Marketing provided with course Exams are set up weekly by approved proctors in various locations throughout Missouri and Colorado.

You are issued a HESQA ID# from the DOE. The ID is located on each score, placed on all marketing materials, and used throughout the process. Facebook ads are created for you Marketing is created for your community Flyers are made for use in your community A press release is prepared for you notifying local media of the Home Energy Score You are given a HESQA badge and shirt (if you are a current BPI or RESNET Rater you will only receive a badge)

If you are a veteran, dislocated worker, or unemployed : The certification course is approved by WIA in Colorado & Missouri for funding. Go to your local one-stop career center and they will assist you with the process. If you are a veteran, other options are available for funding the course.

You can also purchase higher quality printed marketing materials and products. You do not have to purchase these material; it is your choice. You must use our DOE approved marketing materials. Use of other marketing materials prior to DOE approval will warrant removal from the program. We are open to suggestions, and our marketing division will work with you if you have an idea for marketing or a specific flyer or event in your community. We are here to help you become successful.

REVIEW: Spirit Foundation requirements recap Pass the DOE exam, proctored by Spirit Foundation: This is a difficult test that requires studying. You have 3 chances to pass it. If you do not pass the 3rd time, you are ineligible to participate in the program. The course includes one proctored exam. Each additional exam (due to not passing the 1st time) will cost you $100 per exam for proctor and test set-up with the DOE. Follow the Spirit Foundation procedures for assessing homes.
