Dante Alighieri :

Early Life: 

Early Life Dante Alighieri was born to a poor but noble family in Florence, Italy, around 1265-the real date of his birth is not known. His real name is Durante degli Alighieri. During the time he was born, Italy was not a united county, but made up of small city-states. In 1300 a brawl during the May Festival lead to the overthrow of Dante’s party, and the exile of it’s leaders, including Dante, from Florence. http://www.italnet.nd.edu/Dante/text/Chronology.html

Dante’s Political Life: 

Dante’s Political Life During the 12th and the 13 th , the Guelphs and Ghibellines conflict was apart of may Florentines’ lives-Dante was no different. He fought in the Battle of Campaldino in June of 1289. In order to further his political career he became a pharmacist. Becoming a pharmacist was not his intent. Exile : 

Exile In November of 1301, Charles of Valois entered Florence and for six days and destroyed much of it and killed many people. A new government was installed and Dante was exiled for two years had to pay a large sum of money. He did not pay the fee believing that he was not guilty and because the government had taken all of his possessions. Because of this, he was exiled forever. Dante’s Interest : 

Dante’s Interest Besides writing poetry, Dante study philosophy. He spent many months visiting many religious schools. At the Dominican school in Santa Maria Novella, Dante would have most likely learned about logic and natural philosophy. Dante was an idealist when it came to his viewpoint. One of his works, The Convivio, talks about his thirty months study and his philosophical thoughts. La Divina Commedia (The Divine Comedy): 

La Divina Commedia (The Divine Comedy) The Divine Comedy was an epic poem written by Dante between 1308 and 1321. The epic poem was made up of three parts: Inferno (Hell), Purgatorio (Purgatory), and Paradiso (Heaven). The story resovels around Dante making his way through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven with Virgil as his guide though Hell, and Purgatory, and Beatrice as his guide through heaven. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divine_Comedy

Vita Nuova (The New Life): 

Vita Nuova (The New Life) When Dante was nine, he meet a girl named Bica Portinari. He feel in love with that instant. But when they grew up, Bica heard a bad rumor about him and from then on refused to talk to him . In 1290 she died, and in her honor, Dante wrote poems about her. In his book Vita Nuova, Dante talks about his love for Bica, and puts many of his poems of her in the book.
