A Revolution in Shore Power Design :

A Revolution in Shore Power Design 1

Slide 2:

2 History

Slide 3:

3 Problems L5-30’s design flaws Curved electrical pins means minimal electrical contact area Visible gap between body of plug and inlet housing allows for movement of plug within the inlet Nonexistent weatherproofing Difficult to orient in low light or hard to reach scenarios. Offset pin must be located before connecting Result in… Loose ConnectionsElectrical pins bear any movement or tension in the cord. When pins work loose the contact area is further lessened, creating resistance CorrosionLoose connections coupled with a lack of weatherproof seals allow for moisture intrusion and corrosion, creating even more resistance FailureThis resistance caused by poor design, loose connections and corrosion causes electrical arcing, overheating and eventually scorching and/or fire

4 Problems

Slide 5:

Over $100 million of marine and environmental damage in the last 10 years in the Northwestern US alone. Over 100,000 replacement plugs and cords are sold each year. 5 Seattle boat fire caused by failed shore power. 3 boats totaled, 4 heavily damaged. Over $2 million in damages. Dec, 2009 Problems

Slide 6:

6 Enter the SmartPlug It’s Safe Sleeve connection Multi-point locking system 20x electrical contact area Triple weatherproof seals Trip thermostat cuts powerbefore overheating It’s Easy Ease of installation, fits standard mounting footprint Pushes straight in, no twisting required The Solution

Slide 7:

7 Sleeve Connection In the old twist lock design, the electrical pins were responsible for holding the plug into the inlet, as well as bearing any stress or tension in the cord. The SmartPlug’s sleeved design means that the body of the plug absorbs any stress or tension placed on the cordset, allowing the electrical pins to remain stable and provide maximum electrical contact area. Features

Slide 8:

8 Locking side levers automatically snap into place when the connector is pushed straight into the inlet. The locking inlet cover snaps down onto the rear of the connector to complete the SmartPlug’s patented multi-point locking system. Features Multi-point locking system

Slide 9:

9 20x electrical contact area SmartPlug’s electrical contacts have more than twenty times the amount of surface area than the old twist lock model, allowing for much greater current flow and lower resistance, for less heat and no arcing. Features

Slide 10:

10 Triple Weatherproof Seals Inlet Cover Seal: Seals on underside of the cover keep water out of the inlet when not in use. Recessed Face Seal: Prevents moisture intrusion and corrosion of the pins when connector is in use. Cord Seal: Prevents water intrusion into the connector housing. Features

Slide 11:

11 Thermal Protection Integrated Thermostat: To prevent overheating, an internal thermostat shuts off electrical current at 200°F (93°C), right before the temperature at which wires begin to soften. It will then restore power once the inlet has cooled back down to a safe 120°F (49°C). Features

Slide 12:

Ease of Installation 12 Installation Exact Same Footprint SmartPlug Systems always recommends using a professional installer, but installation is also a snap to do yourself. To replace a legacy-style inlet, simply unscrew it and connect the wiring to the SmartPlug inlet. Refasten using the original hole pattern. To replace a connector on an existing cordset, just cut off the legacy-style round plug, strip the wires and fasten to the SmartPlug.

Quality Assurance :

Quality Assurance Independently tested to meet ABYC E-11 standards Meets performance requirements of all UL and UL Marine 817 tests as certified by IMANNA laboratories US Coast Guard compliant Industry leading 7-Year warranty 13
