In the downtown areas, you’ll see a number of historic sites and relics, such as Du Fu’s Thatched Cottage, Wuhou Temple, Wangjian’s Mausoleum and Jinsha Ruins, etc. In the districts and counties nearby, you may visit Mt. Qingcheng and Dujianyan Irrigation Project. UNESCO put both of them on the list of the World Cultural Heritage in 2000. In addition, you can hike in the Snow-capped Xiling Mountain. It is a national key tourist resort as well as a summer resort. Since ancient times, Chengdu has been known as the “Land of Abundance”. Today it is also famous all over the world for the hometown of giant pandas. Now, we’re going to the Du Fu’s Thatched Cottage. The river you see on your left is the Jinjiang River or Brocade River. Chengdu is famous for the brocade production as early as 2000 years ago. For this reason, Chengdu earned the nickname “Jincheng” or “Jinguancheng”. It literally means the brocade city in Chinese. Silk washed in the river proved to be brighter and fresher. So the river was also named Jinjiang River, or Brocade River. Beside the river stands its namesake, the present Jinjiang Hotel which we checked in last night. Everybody! Did you see the flowers along the bank of the Jinjiang River? Anybody knows why Chengdu is also called Rongcheng? The name of the flowers is just another name of the city! During the Five-Dynasty Period, the hibiscus-loving King Meng Chang had these flowers planted throughout the entire city. When the hibiscuses were in bloom, the display of colorful hibiscus flowers presented a fantastic spectacle that extended for 65 kilometers. Chengdu became known as the “hibiscus city”, literally means Rongcheng in Chinese. Well, we’re passing the Qingyang Temple. It is believed that Lao Zi, the founder of Taoism, just rode the green goat in the temple all the way to Mt. Wawu, where he meditated and practiced Taoism. Some of you suggest we should visit the temple right now. But I recommend you’d better hike in Mt. Qingcheng, the holy site of Taoism tomorrow. You’ll see a great number of much more giant Taoist halls and temples built upon the mountain. Now, we’ve arrived at the front gate of Du Fu’s Thatched Cottage. Please look at the horizontal board! It was inscribed with two Chinese characters Cao Tang (Thatched Cottage). Now, we’re going to enter the front gate of Du Fu’s Thatched Cottage. Remember our coach number and keep pace with me. We’ll get together at the back gate after sightseeing. At 4:00pm, I’ll take you to have tea in the tea house nearby. I am sure you’ll be carried away by the delicate aroma and strong aura of the local customs. Enjoy your tea while listening to story-telling. What fun it is! Mt. QingchengIV. TOURISM AND TRAVEL : IV. Role-Playing:Introduce What the “Travel Management Practices” Is to the TouristsPart IV Travel Management Practices: Part IV Travel Management Practices NEW TOURISM With its booming economy, foreign companies are proliferating(扩大) their presence in China---- where a market much different from that in the United States is yielding a new set of challenges for corporate travel managers. So when you enter the China’s travel market, you may encounter the management practices you may need time to get yourself familiar with or to change as time passes. China has been taking measures to adopt e-ticketing on domestic flights. E-tickets on domestic fares are accepted by the customers and will be mandatory( 强制执行的) in the near future. The airport infrastructures are scheduled to be upgraded. When it comes to reservations systems, China has not completely opened its market to the outside world. Travel Sky is the predominant(占支配地位的) global distribution system and the only legal ticketing system in the country. However, China’s accession to the World Trade Organization eventually will open the country to foreign GDSs (全球分销系统). While consumers in the country have been receptive( 可以接受的) to online booking, corporate-specific booking tools are a recent addition in the country. American Express(美国运通) launched American Express Online, a booking tool for companies with travelers based in China. China is the most robust (充满活力的) tourist market in the world. Since 1994, inbound travelers to China have jumped from less than 44 million to about 109 million according to Tourism Research Center at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Despite the challenges posed by the burgeoning (萌芽的) market, companies based in China as well as their travelers are becoming more receptive to the new concept of travel management. It is situated in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers in southwest China. Besides the Han nationality who forms the majority of its population of 30.9million, numerous ethnic groups reside in Chongqing, including Yi, Tibetan, Miao, Qiang and Tujia. Since its founding 3,000years ago, Chongqing has been called Yuzhou, before getting its present name nearly 800 years ago. Since the Qin Dynasty, many dynasties have set up administrative institutions that have endowed the city with brilliant cultures. Perched beside the Yangtze, the “Golden River”, Chongqing symbolizes Yangtze River civilizations and is the cradle of Bayu culture. Today, Chongqing is a modern city, China’s fourth municipality after Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin. It is a historical and cultural city as well as a commercial city. Chongqing attracts visitors from home and abroad for its cultural heritage and other tourist attractions. The city is the starting point for the Yangtze River Cruise, which explores the stunning scenery of the Three Gorges. Other attractions include the Dazu Grottos, valuable works of art carved during the 9th century, and Gold Buddhist Mountain, a kingdom of diverse animals and plants. Ancient Ciqikou Village lures tourists to linger in its streets to buy handicraft souvenirs. Chongqing is also famous for its hot Sichuan cuisine and world-famous hotpot dishes. Xi’an has a long history. Since the earliest societies, humanity lived and multiplied here. It served as a capital for twelve dynasties, including the Western Zhou, Qin, Western Han, Sui and Tang dynasties, spanning over 1,120 years. It became the oriental cultural center of the Silk Road. Xi’an is the largest commercial and trade-hub, as well as the largest material distribution center in the Mid-Western Region of northern China. As shown in a report in 1998, there are more than 100,000 commercial service networks, 435 consumption markets, and 485 various types of wholesale markets, and nearly 1,000 wholesale agencies. There are many historic places to be seen in Xi’an. One of the oldest is the Banpo Village Remains, the site of a 6,000-year-old village which belongs to the Neolithic Age. In the capital city, Xi’an, you can see the City Wall, which was first constructed in the Han Dynasty, a century before the Christian era and is now the largest and most well-preserved ancient wall existing in China. Xi’an Forest of Stone Steles Museum boasts a largest collection of the stone tablets in China, 114 of which are engraved with “classic” texts. There are many more ancient structures and temples such as the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Lesser Wild Goose Pagoda, Bell Tower and the Drum Tower. The highlight of a Xi’an tour for many visitors is the amazing Museum of Qin Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses who guard a site honored as the Eighth Great Wonder of the world. Exercises of READING: MT. UANGSHAN : Read the passage aloud, and work in group of two or three students to have a topic discussion. Why does Xi’an boast so many tourists sites? What are the main places of interest in Xi’an City? Which one do you like best? Exercises of READING: MT. UANGSHAN ROLE PLAY: ROLE PLAY American tourists are walking along the City Wall of Xi’an City. They have a bird’s-eye view of the city landscape and talk about their historical interests they have visited in Xi’an. Tomorrow they will fly back to New York.Translation: Translate the following passage into Chinese Computer Reservation System The computerized networks and electronic distribution systems developed in the 1970s led to dramatic structural changes within the tourism industry. A computer Reservation System(CRS) is essentially a database that enables a tourism organization to manage its inventory and improve accessibility to information within and between its partners. Airlines pioneered the CRS technology in the 1980s, by expanding geographical coverage and integrating horizontally and vertically to embrace the entire range of intermediaries and principals. As a result, the vast, new all-encompassing GDSs matured from their original development as airline CRSs. According to many commentators, GDSs are the single most important facilitator of the globalization of ITs.
