What is diabetes mellitus? : What is diabetes mellitus? A chronic condition associated with abnormally high blood sugar
Results from either deficiency of or a resistance to insulin- a hormone produced by the pancreas whose function is to lower blood sugar.
Types of Diabetes Mellitus : Types of Diabetes Mellitus Type 1: insulin dependent; juvenile on set
Type 2; adult on set diabetes; non-insulin dependant
Symptoms : Symptoms The same for types one and two
excessive secretion of urine, thirst, weight loss, and tiredness
Treatment : Treatment Diet and physical activity
Insulin injections
Oral agents
Complications : Complications Diabetic retinopathy: a leading cause of blindness and visual disability
Kidney failure
Heart disease
Diabetic neuropathy
Diabetic foot disease
Prevention : Prevention Moderate reduction in weight
Half an hour of walking daily
Balanced diet
