I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I used to be an emotional eater. That means I ate when I was Anxious Angry Bored Lonely Sad I couldn’t really tell when I was hungry or satisfied. I used to carry an extra 70 pounds. Slide 3: www.GotStressGetHelp.com Now I eat mainly when I am hungry and I stop when I am satisfied. I choose foods that I love and that make my body feel good. I don’t deprive myself. I don’t diet! I have maintained my weight loss for 3+ years. Slide 4: www.GotStressGetHelp.com I will tell you my secret! I had to change the kinds of foods I ate for health reasons. I had a systemic yeast infection. I overcame my sugar addiction immediately using EFT. I rarely crave chocolate anymore! Instead I crave broccoli! Wow! Slide 5: www.GotStressGetHelp.com In the next slide I will introduce you to EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique. I think of it as an “erasure” for emotional or physical pain. As such it has given me confidence to try new things and achieve amazing results. Slide 6: www.GotStressGetHelp.com Emotional Freedom Technique is the process I used to overcome sugar cravings, chocolate cravings and reduce my emotional eating. It is a direct way to work with troublesome emotions that drive overeating. Anytime you eat when you are not hungry, that is emotional eating. Slide 7: www.GotStressGetHelp.com EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique, is a quick, painless way to reduce or eliminate anxiety and stress. It is based on acupressure points that are stimulated simply by gently tapping on them while focusing on whatever is stressing you. The SUDS Level Subjective Units of Distress EFT works best when you focus on a very specific feeling, event, physical sensation/pain or memory that has a high level of intensity to it. Before you start tapping you rate the intensity of the upset on a scale of 0 – 10, low – high. This is your initial SUDS Level. We check again after you have done several rounds of tapping to see if something has changed. Slide 8: www.GotStressGetHelp.com The Set-Up Statement In EFT the tapping is paired with a Set-Up Statement that is designed to get your mind focused on and experiencing the intensity of the issue that you want to work with. Don’t worry that it starts out with something “negative.” You will NOT be tapping this negative thought into your mind. It is already there. We are using EFT to get rid of it! The Set-Up Statement usually takes the form of “Even though I have this _______________________, I deeply love and accept myself.” You might want to write this down before you get started. Slide 9: www.GotStressGetHelp.com Getting Started Using EFT To start using EFT, select a distressing emotion, issue, memory, or physical pain to work on. Create your Set-Up Statement. Be very specific in describing the emotion, issue, memory, or physical pain. Determine your SUDS Level - at this moment while thinking of your emotion, issue, memory, or physical pain rate how intense it is NOW. No sense working on something that has no intensity to it! Start tapping on the “karate chop” point (shown at right) while repeating the Set-Up Statement aloud 3 times. Slide 10: www.GotStressGetHelp.com Tap on All Points Next, starting at the top of the head, tap at least 7 times on all the points shown to the right (except the “tender spot”) using 2 fingers and saying aloud a “shorthand” version of your Set-Up Statement. If so, let ‘er rip! This is a sign that your energy is shifting and most likely you are releasing your distress. Slide 11: www.GotStressGetHelp.com Tap on All Points Continue tapping on all points until you have reached a SUDS Level of zero. It does NOT matter what order you tap on the points, though it’s easy to remember if you tap in this order: Top of Head Eyebrow Side of eye Under eye Under Nose Chin Collarbone Under arm Repeat until your SUDS Level = O Slide 12: www.GotStressGetHelp.com Continue Tapping on All Points If your distress has dropped, but not to zero, be persistent. Keep tapping. Sometimes in the course of tapping other feelings, memories or issues pop into your mind. Write them down and create a new Set-Up Statement for each of those to be tapped on later. If the intensity will not go down, try one of the following things: instead of tapping on the “karate chop” point to start, try rubbing the “tender spot” while saying your Set-Up Statement as before. Get a drink of water. Wait until later Slide 13: www.GotStressGetHelp.com Now I want to give you a list of possible Set-Up Statements to use for Food Cravings, so you can try this yourself. First select your favorite food…you know the one that you CRAVE! For many of us it is either something sweet or something salty or fatty. Open it, smell it…really get your craving UP for it, but DON’T eat it just yet! Slide 14: www.GotStressGetHelp.com Now we’re going to teach you how to eliminate that craving! Start by creating a Set-Up Statement. Let’s use my old favorite – chocolate. “Even though I really, really want to eat this chocolate, I deeply love and accept myself.” Now determine your SUDS Level. Is it a 6? A 10? Write it down so you can compare it later. Slide 15: www.GotStressGetHelp.com Starting at the Top of Head, say “I really want this chocolate” while tapping 7 times. Moving to the Eyebrow point, tap and say “I crave this chocolate.” Moving to the side of the eye, tap and say, “I got to have this chocolate or I’ll go crazy!” Slide 16: www.GotStressGetHelp.com Moving to under the eye, tap and say, “Chocolate is my friend. I love it and can’t live without it.” Move to under the nose, tap and say, “Unless I can!” Move to the chin point, tap and say, “No, I can’t!” Move to the collarbone point, tap and say, “Yes, I can!” Slide 17: www.GotStressGetHelp.com Once you sense a “shift” in your thoughts and feelings, go back and determine your SUDS level again. Has it gone up or down? If it’s gone down, but is not yet at zero, either keep tapping as before, or ask yourself, “what might be keeping it where it is?” Slide 18: www.GotStressGetHelp.com If the intensity of the craving has gone UP, then there is likely to be another aspect of the issue that has emerged. See if you can figure out what that is and turn that into it’s own Set Up phrase and starting at the Karate Chop point, do new rounds of tapping on that until it is eliminated.
