Adjectives go before nouns. e.g. This is a big house. It is a small stone. adj + noun adj + noun Adjectives can be used alone after the verb to be.e.g. He is poor. She is cute. ADJECTIVES ADVERBS : ADVERBS An adverb describes a verb. It shows how, where, when or how often someone does something. Adverbs usually go after verbs. Slide 4: He walks slowly. verb adverb How does he walk? Slowly Slide 5: People study quietly in a verb adverb library. How do people study in a library? Quietly Formation of adverbs : We usually form an adverb by adding –ly to the adjective. e.g. slow- slowly Adjectives ending in y drop y and take –ily e.g. angry-angrily Adjectives ending in –l take –ly e.g. careful-carefully Formation of adverbs Slide 7: She shouts angrily. Slide 8: Archeologists excavate carefully. Formation of adverbs : Some adverbs are not formed according to the rules as on the previous slide. They have either a different form or the same as the adjective: Formation of adverbs Slide 10: Fazil Say is a good piano player. He works hard. adjective adverb Exercises : Write the adverbs for the following adjectives: Exercises look, smell, sound, feel, taste + adjective : The verbs look, smell, sound, feel, taste take an adjective not an adverb. e.g. They look happy. examples: This cake tastes delicious. verb 2. She feels ill. verb look, smell, sound, feel, taste + adjective look, smell, sound, feel, taste + adjective : 3. The woman looks happy. verb 4. These flowers smell nice. verb look, smell, sound, feel, taste + adjective Exercises : Exercises Underline the correct item. Adverb or adjective? My bedroom is tidy/tidily. It is snowing heavy/heavily. Cross the road careful/carefully. My teacher was very angry/angrily. Get ready for school quick/quickly. The test was very easy/easily.
