Sampling in Six Sigma Sampling in Six sigma is an important aspect and if the sampling is not done with proper care the whole of the project may be ruined. Sampling involves the measuring of large number of data in simple measurement techniques so that a inference for the whole population can be drawn. Thus sampling can be defined as a method to draw inference about characteristics from a large group of items by examining a few individual elements which represent the whole group. This method of analyzing data is really effective in Six sigma as one is able to handle large numbers of data with a small group of elements that will give the inference to the users to be used as a benchmark. This method is quite effective as a cost saving measure. Consider testing a car for the aftermaths of a crash if we crash all the cars for testing it the cost will not really be in reach of any organization and the method is not viable. Thus sampling is done and an inference is drawn which is taken as a benchmark for all the elements in that particular population. Sampling is a step wise process and needs to be done in an organized and planned manner. The first and most important step to good sampling is defining the population that is under the scanner then one has to determine the sample size and select the sampling techniques. While defining the population one has to be very careful that all the attributes of the population are covered. Thus the elements that are to be taken should be drawn from the entire population so that the attributes come out in a homogeneous manner. Defining the population becomes extremely important as it is the basis for determination of the sample size and selection of the sample technique. Many people will ask the question as to how large or small should the sample size be? The Sample size should be such that it represents the total population.

Simple Random Sampling, Systematic Random Sampling and Stratified Random Sampling can be used as sampling techniques. All these techniques have their own pros and cons and should be selected after closely analyzing the data that has been collected. A large number of data has to be collected and analyzed in the process of a six sigma project thus all the team members involved directly or indirectly have to be in the know how of statistical methods like sampling so that they can easily draw inferences and have a total control over variations that have to be controlled to attain a Six Sigma level for the whole organization.
