The Importance of Defect measurement in Six Sigma Management Six Sigma is a strategy that uses number of metrics for measuring defects and improving quality through methodological approach for achieving defect level to 3.4 defects per million opportunities. The quality improvement management technique of Six Sigma has its own limitation. The measuring parameter of 3.4 defect level accuracy does not make any sense in all the business process. The 1.5 Sigma shift should be applied carefully as the small change in this improvement shift can lead to major mistakes in calculations. The Six Sigma gives emphasizes on the data analyzing techniques and if the quality data is not available then this strategy almost fails to make any judgment. The next thing is process variability, if the process is more variable the probability of defect will be high. Hence the zero defect possibility or 99.95 % perfection is sometimes becomes impossible in some business processes. If the quality data which is gathered finally turns to be wrong or no appropriate tools are used then the whole methodology will not be effective in promoting the business and the company has to suffer due to the defect in this one step of the whole DMAIC ( Define, Measure , Analyze, Improve and Control) strategy. All these steps are interconnected and if fails to give its absolute results, the other tool have to suffer and ultimately the new quality improvement approach lags behind in moving any business process forward to its heights.

The data so collected for evaluating and making comparison for the present and future are dependent upon very limited number of tools for collecting and measuring in some of the business processes. This actually needs more research to be done in this area of measurement so as to have various measuring options in hands of the competent Sigma belt holders. The Six Sigma parameters of defect measuring strategies are quantitative and not subjective. The main dimensions through which the whole measurement is taken are price, quality level, delivery etc. In industrial process, these dimensions are called as CTP or critical price, CTQ or critical to quality and CTD or critical to delivery. All of these parameters have their own different effect in different industries. Therefore these measuring tools must be taken in account for Six Sigma quality implementation of any specific industry.
