Where DMAIC stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control. DMADV represents the five steps Define, Measure, Analyze, Design and Verify. While implementing DMAIC on a existing business process one has to Define the problem which is causing quality issues in the end product. This can be done by having a feedback from the customers who are directly involved with the process or the end users. Next one has to measure the critical inputs that are going into the process as inputs so as to have an idea about the right and wrong inputs and their right quantities.

The Analyze phase involves the investigation of data and the cause and effect relationships in the process. Care is taken to consider all the factors working in the process. The root cause of the problem is also identified in this stage itself. Improving and optimizing the process on the basis of the data analysis with tools like poka yoke and DOE are undertaken in the next step. Controlling the future state to avoid any deviations from the from target is carried out so that defects can be brought under control. Thus DMAIC forms a basis for implementing the six sigma strategy for an existing business process and is quite effective in almost all cases wherever it has been implemented so far. DMAIC is also called the soul of Six Sigma as all the activities of a team and an individual revolve around these five phases.
