Slide 2:

A gerund is a verbal that ends in - ing and functions as a noun . The term verbal indicates that a gerund, like the other two kinds of verbals (infinitive and participle), is based on a verb and therefore expresses action or a state of being. However, since a gerund functions as a noun, it occupies some positions in a sentence that a noun ordinarily would, for example : subject subject complement direct/indirect object object of a preposition

I . Gerund as subject: 1. Skiing is my favorite sport. 2. Hiking can be very strenuous. 3 . Traveling might satisfy your desire for new experiences. Smoking is bad for the health. Reading helps build your vocabulary.

II. Gerund as subject complement: 1. My cat's favorite activity is sleeping. 2. One of my hobbies is cooking . 3. My Dad’s favorite activity is fishing . 4. My sister’s first love is painting . 5. His priority for now is hiking .

III. Gerund as direct/indirect object: They do not appreciate my singing . I love your cooking . 3 . He gives eating too much time. My friend hates commuting . The house needs repainting .

IV. Gerund as object of a preposition: 1. I am interested in stargazing. 2. The police arrested him for speeding. 3. Please have a drink before leaving. 4. The job consists of typing, filing, and answering the phone. 5. Danica is excited about going to the dance.

Gerunds can sometimes take objects of their own: 1. Roland is afraid of making mistakes. 2. Sandy is considering leaving New York . 3. She admits copying the essay from someone else.
