Plan and pursue a research project with intellectual initiative and insight Formulate a precise research question Gather and interpret material from sources appropriate to the research question Structure a reasoned argument in response to the research question on the basis of the material gathered Present the essay in a format appropriate to the subject acknowledging sources in one of the established academic ways Use the terminology and language appropriate to the subject with skill and understanding Apply analytical and evaluative skills appropriate to the subject with an understanding of the implications and the context of the researchSlide 5: IF YOU : State your question clearly in the introduction and make sure it can support a focussed argument within the word limit you will get 2 points State the argument you are debating in your introduction and explain why it is worth investigating you will get 2 points Can show you have used lots of relevant resources eg books, journals, websites from lots of different places to support your arguments you will get 4 points If you can show you really understand your topic by referring to your research documents throughout you will get 4 points Now we have 12 points !Slide 6: IF YOU : Present your ideas clearly so they tell a story and give a reasoned argument you will get 4 points Can show analytical and evaluative skills you will get 4 points Can use the technical language used in your subject matter appropriately you will get 4 points Write a conclusion that weighs up your argument and states your own opinion based on the evidence you will get 2 points Now we have 26 points !Slide 7: IF YOU : Layout your essay so it has a title page, table of contents, page numbers, illustrations, quotations, referencing, citations, bibliography and appendices you will get 4 points Write an abstract that doesn’t exceed 300 words and that includes what was investigated, how the investigation was done and what your conclusions were you will get 2 points Can put in something unusual eg a visit, an unusual source or referenced anecdote or think laterally about your topic you could get up to 4 points Now we have 36 points !Slide 8: HOW DO YOU FEEL ?Slide 10: The research questionSlide 11: bad question - Good question ?
