Appreciate relevant legal, inspection and college context for equality and diversity. Explore where these can be effectively embedded into our lessons and tutorials. Some of us will also be able to: Begin evaluating where E&D and ECM can be evidenced within our teaching and/or curriculum teams. Challenging Perceptions : Challenging Perceptions Equality Legislation : Equality Legislation What 7 aspects of our identity are currently protected from discrimination? Race Disability Gender Gender Identity Age Sexual Orientation Religion & Belief Equality Legislation : Equality Legislation New Equality Act 2010 (from 1st October) will call these aspects ‘protected characteristics’ and identifies a further 2 areas. What do you think these might be? Marriage / civil partnerships Pregnancy / maternity Plus, Public Sector Equality Duty (April 2011). Ofsted Inspection of Equality : Ofsted Inspection of Equality When Ofsted refers to equality and diversity, it includes these seven equality strands used by the Equality & Human Rights Commission. AND, it also includes social aspects such as poverty and deprivation. Aspiration & Ambition – No one is left behind So that makes 10! Quiz Time : Quiz Time In Small Groups Cases going through the Disability Rights Commission. : Cases going through the Disability Rights Commission. 2 court cases; Issue of Risk Assessment. Three “section five’s” against FE providers. Over 300 cases settled through conciliation, many in favour of the learner, generally involving: Formal letter of apology from a senior manager. Action plan detailing what action will be taken to prevent a reoccurrence to another learner. Compensation payments. Further Case Examples : Further Case Examples Process for encouraging disclosure, respecting confidentiality. Communication mechanisms to pass information onto others. Learners deterred from courses, despite meeting entry criteria. Attitudes / inflexibility / insensitivity of staff. Inaccessibility of buildings. Slide 10: The underpinning principle of the Disability Equality Duty is the social model of disability… We must actively PROMOTE the first three characteristics – Race, Disability & Gender. Putting Today in Context! : Putting Today in Context! The challenges for Oaklands – to embed E&D across the organisation so that this is central and fundamental to all we do. Embedding E&D within curriculum planning and teaching and learning is an integral part of this challenge. A Curriculum for Diversity? : A Curriculum for Diversity? At the macro level this has implications for: Induction, Tutorial modules, Supporting staff to become confident to tackle inappropriate language and behaviours, Organisational vision and values in relation to E&D and how these are built into the college charter and equal opportunities policy, and communicated to all, and Embedding E&D with self assessment and quality improvement activities such as lesson observation, learner feedback and data analysis. Embedding E&D within Observations : Embedding E&D within Observations What do you consider are the characteristics of good equality and diversity practice that observers should look for during YOUR classes? The challenge for Oaklands is to discover how the 7/8ths beneath the surface affect learning… We also have a challenge not to stereotype learners according to the culture or community to which they belong.
