Prior to the 19th century, it possessed an advanced economy; but successive dynasties missed the Industrial Revolution that occurred in Europe and China began to decline. In the 19th and 20th century, European and Japanese imperialism , internal weakness and civil war damaged the country and its economy, and led to the overthrow of imperial rule . Introduction : Study Engineering in China 6 Introduction In 1949, after major combat in the Chinese Civil War had ended, two states whose official names are "China" emerged: The People's Republic of China (PRC), established in 1949, commonly known as China , has control over mainland China and the largely self-governing territories of Hong Kong (since 1997) and Macau (since 1999) as well as many islands . The Republic of China (ROC) established in 1912 in mainland China, now commonly known as Taiwan , since 1945 has had control over the islands of Taiwan , Penghu , Kinmen , Matsu and a few other outlying islands .Slide 7: Study Engineering in China 7Slide 8: Study Engineering in China 8 Main Cities in PR ChinaIntroduction: Study Engineering in China 9 Introduction Population (2010) : 1,339,724,852 [% of World population: 19.24% ] Main Cities (Population: 2010) : 上海 Shanghai (22,265,426); 北京 Beijing (19,295,000); 天津 Tianjin (11,090,044); 杭州 Hangzhou (5,695,313); 武汉 Wuhan (6,434,373); 南京 Nanjing (6,852,984); 成都 Chengdu (7,123,697); 西安 Xi'an (3,890,098); 哈尔滨 Harbin (4,517,549); 重庆 Chongqing (5,402,721); 长沙 Changsha (3,093,980); 大连 Dalian (3,266,905)Slide 10: Study Engineering in China 10 Shanghai BeijingSlide 11: Study Engineering in China 11 Tianjin ChongqingSlide 12: Study Engineering in China 12 Zhonghua Gate is the south gate of the walled city of Nanjing . All citizens must attend school for at least nine years. The government provides primary education for six years, starting at age six or seven, followed by six years of secondary education for ages 12 to 18.Slide 18: Study Engineering in China 18 Educational Stages in China Primary School [Age : 6 – 11] Junior Secondary School [Age : 12 – 14] Senior Secondary School [Age : 15 – 17] Vocational School [Age : 15 – 17] University or College [Age : 18 – 22]Education System in China: Study Engineering in China 19 Education System in China There are over 100 National Key Universities , including Beijing University and Tsinghua University . China's educational horizons are expanding. Ten years ago the MBA was virtually unknown but by 2004 there were 47,000 MBAs, trained at 62 MBA schools. Many people also apply for international professional qualifications, such as EMBA and MPA ; close to 10,000 MPA students are enrolled in 47 schools of higher learning.Education System in China: Study Engineering in China 20 Education System in China The education market has rocketed, with training and testing for professional qualifications, such as computer and foreign languages, thriving. Continuing education is the trend, once in one's life schooling has become lifelong learning .C9 League - China: Study Engineering in China 21 C9 League - China On May 4, 1998, Project 985 was initiated by the Chinese government in order to advance the higher education system. In the first phase, nine universities were selected and allocated funding for the first period of three years. On October 10, 2009, these nine universities created the C9 League. The universities collectively account for 3% of the country's researchers but receive 10% of national research expenditures, and produce the lion's share of output, generating 20% of the country's journal articles and 30% of total citations.Slide 22: Study Engineering in China 22 University Province or Municipality Date Founded Fudan University Shanghai 1905 Harbin Institute of Technology Heilongjiang 1920 Nanjing University Jiangsu 1902 Peking University Beijing 1898 Shanghai Jiao Tong University Shanghai 1896 Tsinghua University Beijing 1911 University of Science and Technology of China Anhui 1958 Xi'an Jiao Tong University Shaanxi 1896 Zhejiang University Zhejiang 1897 C9 League - ChinaSlide 23: Study Engineering in China 23 The Old Gate is a symbol of Tsinghua UniversityAdvantages to Study Engineering in China - Versatibility: Study Engineering in China 24 Advantages to Study Engineering in China - Versatibility A wide range of degree programmes. The Sydney Accord ( 2001) - engineering technology, normally of three years duration. The Dublin Accord (2002) - technician engineering, normally of two years duration. International Engineering Alliance (IEA) : Study Engineering in China 47 International Engineering Alliance (IEA) Agreements covering competence standards for practising engineers The APEC Engineer agreement ( 1999). This has Government support in the participating APEC economies. The representative organization in each economy creates a "register" of those engineers wishing to be recognised as meeting the generic international standard. Other economies should give credit when such an engineer seeks to have his or her competence recognised. The Agreement is largely administered between engineering bodies, but there can be Government representation and substantive changes need to be signed off at governmental APEC Agreement level. The Engineers Mobility Forum agreement (2001). It operates the same competence standard as the APEC Engineer agreement but any country/economy may join. The parties to the agreement are largely engineering bodies. There are intentions to draw EMF and APEC closer together. The Engineering Technologist Mobility Forum agreement was signed by participating economies/countries in 2003. The parties to the Agreement have agreed to commence establishing a mutual recognition scheme for engineering technologists.Washington Accord - Full Signatories (2011): Study Engineering in China 48 Washington Accord - Full Signatories (2011) Australia - Represented by Engineers Australia ( 1989 ) Canada - Represented by Engineers Canada ( 1989 ) Chinese Taipei - Represented by Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan ( 2007 ) Hong Kong China - Represented by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers ( 1995 ) Ireland - Represented by Engineers Ireland ( 1989 ) Japan - Represented by Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education ( 2005 ) Korea - Represented by Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea ( 2007 ) Malaysia - Represented by Board of Engineers Malaysia ( 2009 ) New Zealand - Represented by Institution of Professional Engineers NZ ( 1989 ) Singapore - Represented by Institution of Engineers Singapore ( 2006 ) South Africa - Represented by Engineering Council of South Africa ( 1999 ) Turkey - Represented by MUDEK ( 2011 ) United Kingdom - Represented by Engineering Council UK ( 1989 ) United States - Represented by Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology ( 1989 )Washington Accord - Provisional Signatories (2011): Study Engineering in China 49 Washington Accord - Provisional Signatories (2011) Bangladesh - Represented by Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education Germany - Represented by German Accreditation Agency for Study Programs in Engineering and Informatics India - Represented by National Board of Accreditation of All India Council for Technical Education Pakistan - Represented by Pakistan Engineering Council Russia - Represented by Russian Association for Engineering Education Sri Lanka - Represented by Institution of Engineers Sri LankaSlide 50: Study Engineering in China 50 International Engineering Alliance (Reciprocal Recognitions of Academic and Professional Qualifications) Washington Accord Singapore [Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES)] Australia [Engineers Australia][ MIEAust, CPEng ] United Kingdom [Engineering Council][ CEng ] United States of America [Accredited Board for Engineering & Technology ( ABET )] Hong Kong SAR, China [Hong Kong Institution of Engineers ( HKIE )] Taiwan, China [Institute of Engineering Education, Taiwan ( IEET ) Mainland China [China Association for Science & Technology ( CAST ); The National Administration Board of Engineering Registration ( NABER )(Structural).
