Keywords Research Let’s first define what keyword research is, this is the process by which people look up search terms that are related with their niche or business. It is also the process by which the person eliminates or chooses a search term that best fits their goal—whether low competition, high traffic, low CPC or a mixture of these and taking into consideration other SEO goals.

Whether you are using the external adwords keyword tool or the adwords keyword tool, you can begin your keyword research in three different ways. One, if you already have a specific keyword in min, then you can start by entering these keywords inside the ‘word or phrase’ box. Second, if you do not yet have an idea of a keyword yet you already have a website you can just encode your site’s URL inside the ‘website’ box.

Third, if you don’t have any of the two mentioned criteria above, then you can start looking for keywords by picking the category of your niche. For example, you are looking to sell baby clothes so that will be under Apparel > Clothing > Children’s Clothing > Baby & Toddler Clothing  once you have arrived to the specific category that best fits your niche you can begin the search by clicking on the search button. Other Features Google Adwords keyword tools have added features in order to trim down or make the resulting keyword ideas relevant to what you are looking for like: show ideas closely related, advance options for geo-targeting and keyword match types whether phrase, exact or broad phrases matches.

Clicking on the box for ‘only show ideas closely related to my search terms’ will give you keywords that are more relevant to what you are looking for, as you can see in the screenshot below and compare the resulting keyword ideas for the same keyword query.

The advance options for geo-targeting enables you to choose the specific country of your market. It also allows you to choose a specific language if you are using something else aside from English

For keyword match types, you have three selections to choose from. The first is the “Broad” which is the default match type for Google Adwords which is helpful when you want to target key phrases with the highest traffic potential. The second is the “[Exact]” match type which ensures that you get to tap key phrases which are more relevant to the user. The last is the “Phrase” match type which gives you keyword ideas that are in phrases—another term for this would be long-tailed keywords and usually no more than four words.

It is also interesting to note that you can choose search volumes according to the type of device used, whether desktop or mobile from the dropdown menu within ‘Show Ideas and Statistics for’. Recently, mobile devices accounts for up to 40% of website traffic for some businesses. The search patterns are also different with search terms generally being shorter on mobile devices.

Keywords Ideas Columns The Google Adwords columns are: Competition, which shows the adwords consultant just how hard it is to compete for this keyword organically. Global Monthly Searches is a measure of how many people worldwide are using that search term in a span of one year and the monthly average is taken. Local Monthly Searches is the same with the Global Monthly Searches only that it pertains to the specific country you have chosen.

Approximate CPC shows you an estimate of how much a pay per click campaign would cost for that keyword. With Adwords pay per click you can check for keywords that have a lower cost per click, while there are some that have higher click costs even if these two keywords are within the same niche.

Local Search Trends are only available when you are logged in to your Gmail or Google account.  It will show you local trends related to the keywords you’re searching for. Google Adwords keywords tool also have very specific columns like: extracted from webpage and Search Share which are perfect for use for users who have stipulated a website address on their keyword research.
