Mark 16:9-11 :

Mark 16:9-11 Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

Slide 2:

9 Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. 10 She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. 11 But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it. Slide 3:

Mary Magdalene claimed that Jesus had appeared to her which was a counter cultural event. In the time of Jesus women couldn’t even testify in a courtroom without corroboration. It was a male dominated society and women were considered subordinate to men and one step above children therefore any message they delivered needed to be verified. After Mary Magdalene told the disciples about the Resurrection Peter and another disciple, presumably John, had gone to see for themselves (John 20:3-9). After they left Mary Magdalene stood outside the tomb crying (John 20:11).

Slide 4:

From the Gospel of John we learn many more details of the events of that day. John 20:11-18 tells us that Jesus appeared to her but not to Peter and John which would have been a humbling event for men to accept. As we draw back the curtain on the stage of the Old Testament we find Adam and Eve in the garden. In the New Testament we find Mary and Jesus meeting in the garden that surrounded the tomb. Adam’s job was to be the keeper of the garden, to care for the garden and now through the tearful eyes of Mary’s she believes Jesus to be a gardener (Jn. 20:15).

Slide 5:

St. Paul called Jesus the "last Adam" or the New Adam (1 Cor. 15:21-22; 45-49; Romans 5:14) Jesus enters the world as the new Adam, the One who does what Adam was supposed to do. He came, not to do His own will, but the will of the Father. (Mark 10:45) He came to serve and to offer His life as a ransom for many (John 15:13). Jesus enters a garden of Gethsemane and experiences the curse of Adam the dread of death. In Genesis 3:19 Adam will do his work with the “sweat of” [his] face,” Jesus began his work in the garden by sweating blood (Mt. 26:36-46; Lk 22:44) Adam and Eve fell from grace because they disobeyed and ate of the tree. Jesus restored grace when he obeyed and was nailed to a tree, his cross.

Slide 6:

Adam and Eve were disobedient when they ignored the will of the Father and ate of the fruit. Jesus was obedient by doing the will of the Father (Mt. 26:39). Adam and Eve listened to the serpent and wanted to be equal to God. Jesus “though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,” (Philippians 2:6) Adam's bride, Eve, was created from his side while he slept. The Church, the bride of Christ, was born from His side, which was opened by the soldier's lance while he slept in death on the cross. His side issued forth blood and water, symbols of the Eucharist and baptism (Gen 2:21-22; John 19:34; CCC 766 & 1067).
