Mark 15:33-41 :

Mark 15:33-41 The Death of Jesus

Slide 2:

33 And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Elo-i, Elo-i, lama sabach-thani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” 36 And one ran and, filling a sponge full of vinegar, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” 37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed his last. 38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that he thus breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” 40 There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome, 41 who, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered to him; and also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem. Slide 4:

Mark divides Jesus’ crucifixion into two three hour segments. Jesus was crucified at the third hour, 9AM (Mk. 15:25) and hung on the cross in daylight . The second segment 12 noon until 3 was a period of darkness. Jesus then hung on the cross a total of six hours. In the first three hours there was physical daylight but spiritual darkness, a time when Jesus’ enemies walked around beneath his cross wagging their heads, taunting him and simply “enjoying” the spectacle of his immanent death.

Slide 5:

The second three hours was a time of physical darkness but spiritual light as the Father allowed Jesus to take on the sins of man and thus be separated from the Father for that three hour period of darkness. The physical agony was terrible but complete alienation from the Father was the ultimate torture. In the first three hours Jesus was suffering AT the hands of man. In the second three hours He was suffering FOR the sins of man. In the first three hours He was dying because of sin. In the second three hours He was paying for a world darkened by sin.

Slide 6:

At the ninth hour, 3 PM, Jesus cries out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Jesus feels that God had left him but why? In His time on earth Jesus had experienced first hand our work, our relationships, our trials and temptations, yet he never sinned. He never experienced sin and the separation, and the wall sin builds between God and ourselves. Now he had taken on the sins of men and for the first time he experienced the resulting separation and felt forsaken or abandoned.

Slide 7:

Mark tells us, “37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed his last.” Matthew 27:50 and Luke 23:46 tell us Jesus cried with a loud voice and gave up his spirit. John 19:30 tells us that Jesus said, “It is finished.” Jesus had completed his tasks and even though he never sinned he experienced the effects of sin. 38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The curtain in the Temple was the separation between the people and the Holy of Holies or God.

Slide 8:

Being torn from the top to the bottom indicated that the people were no longer separated from God.

Slide 9:

39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that he thus breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” The centurion had witnessed many crucifixions. No one died with forgiveness on their lips thus he recognized Jesus true identity.
