Mark 14:12-21 The Passover with the Disciples

Slide 2:

12 And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 13 And he sent two of his disciples, and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him, 14 and wherever he enters, say to the householder, ‘The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I am to eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.” 16 And the disciples set out and went to the city, and found it as he had told them; and they prepared the passover. 17 And when it was evening he came with the twelve.

Slide 3:

18 And as they were at table eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” 19 They began to be sorrowful, and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” 20 He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. 21 For the Son of man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”

Slide 4:

The Passover with the disciples is in three sections. Preparation for the Passover meal (12-16) The Announcement of the Betrayal (17-21) The Institution of the Eucharist (22-25) In the accounts of the Passover meal, sometimes called the Seder, meaning order, all of the sequential parts (lamb, bitter herbs, sauce) are not mentioned. The purpose of these verses is not to point out that Jesus lived his life on earth as a righteous Jew and followed all the Jewish traditions but to point out that Jesus was about to perform his own Passover when he became the Passover lamb who would die for the sins of many. (See Mk. 14:22-25 Fourth Cup elsewhere on this site) The Passover is celebrated on the 15th day of Nisan, the seventh month of the Jewish lunar calendar.

Slide 5:

If you have ever wondered why Easter Sunday changes from year to year it is because the Jews use a Lunar (Moon) calendar and we use the Gregorian calendar. Easter Sunday thus changes because of the cycles of the Moon. Jews were supposed to eat the Passover lamb in the sanctuary, the Temple precincts (Dt. 16:7). In time the precincts came to mean anywhere in Jerusalem if the lamb was slaughtered in the Temple thus it is the dream of all Jews to go to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. Often times one hears the phrase, “Next year in Jerusalem,” at the end of the Seder. One proof of God’s control of the events is “a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him” (v. 13). Men didn’t carry water, women did, so a man with a water jar would be easily be identified.

Slide 6:

Verse 14 “Where is my guest room, where I am to eat the passover with my disciples?’” Ex. 12:4 tells us that the total lamb must be consumed. Ex. 12:11 tells us the meal was to be eaten with your loins girded, sandals on your feet and a staff in your hand not in a reclining position but in haste as if you were ready to leave. The change to reclining at the table was a sign of liberation of Israel from its bondage, the Jews were free, in the promised land and didn’t have to prepare for an exodus or departure. See the Apologetics page on www.saintpaulministries.net “Eucharist,” Parts 1-6 for the similarities between the Passover and the Catholic Mass.
