Slide 3:
Each time Jesus predicts His death and resurrection (8:31; 9:30–32; 10:32–34) He follows it with a teaching on discipleship (8:32–38; 9:35–37; 10:35–45).
Discipleship is following a master and surrendering to the masters will.
Jesus follows the Father and surrenders to the Father’s will.
Demonstrating that surrender Jesus is making His final trip to Jerusalem, He knows full well that He is on His way to His earthly death. The Twelve were shocked by His prediction because, thinking in human terms, they would not make the trip, as Jesus was doing, if they anticipated that it would lead to their death.
Jesus has again revealed God’s plan.
God will hand Him over to the Jewish leaders, who, in turn, will hand Him over to the Gentiles (the Roman authorities) and He will die and rise to new life in 3 days.
