Slide 2:
31 And He began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
32 And he said this plainly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.
33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but of men.”
34 And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Slide 3:
35 For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.
36 For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?
37 For what can a man give in return for his life?
38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when He comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
9:1 And He said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.” The Holy Bible : Revised Standard Version Second Catholic edition (2006), with the ecclesiastical approval of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Thomas Nelson Publishing for Ignatius Press.
Slide 4:
Jesus will predict His death three times in Mark’s Gospel, this is the first (8:32-33; 9:32; 10:35-37).
With each prediction the Apostles don’t understand or respond appropriately.
Jesus is attempting to teach them about his coming rejection, death and resurrection in order to prepare them for what will happen. Peter doesn’t like what he hears. He like many others are seeking a Messiah who would lead Israel out of their Roman domination.
Then he decided to “rebuke,” to criticize, the man he had just identified as the Messiah.
You have to admire Peter because he always spoke his mind.
Slide 5:
Jesus didn’t meet Peter’s expectation of the expected Messiah, in response to Peter’s rebuke Jesus teaches about the characteristics of true discipleship for all who will follow Him.
“If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me (v.35). This statement isn’t advocating martyrdom but does advocate freely following the Messiah and His teachings (1:18; 2:14).
“deny himself,” is best explained in Psalm 49:6-9.
6 men who trust in their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches?
Slide 6:
7 Truly no man can ransom himself, or give to God the price of his life,
8 for the ransom of his life is costly, and can never suffice,
9 that he should continue to live on for ever, and never see the Pit.
We need to let go of self-determination and replace it with obedience and dependence on God.
If your focus is on the self-centered life found in the world then you not find eternal life (v. 35).
“whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.” because they will find everlasting life with God.
Slide 7:
“Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.”(9:1).
I would argue that Jesus is referring to the transfiguration which immediately follows this statement.
There is further support for this position found in 2 Peter 1:16-18 wherein Peter equates “glory” with Jesus’ transfiguration which was witnessed by Peter, James and John.
