The Holy Bible : Revised Standard Version Second Catholic edition (2006), with the ecclesiastical approval of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Thomas Nelson Publishing for Ignatius Press. Slide 3: Caesarea Philippi is the site of a temple built by Herod the Great, which he dedicated to Augustus Caesar and is about 25 miles north of the Sea of Galilee, and had also been a center of the worship for the pagan gods of Baal and Pan. This city was later enlarged and beautified by Herod the Great’s son Philip, the tetrarch of Trachonitis, and was then called Caesarea Philippi, in part after himself, and partly after the emperor Tiberius Caesar. There is another city called Caesarea on the Mediterranean coast, thus naming this town Caesarea Philippi cleared up any confusion. Slide 4: Caesarea is a Latin word meaning "emperor“ Today, the city is no longer inhabited but is an archaeological site located within the Golan Heights. Jesus asks His disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” But why would He ask that? He wanted to know about His impact on the people, had they discovered for themselves who He really was? Peter says, “You are the Christ.” The word “Christ” is the equivalent of the Hebrew word Messiah but both mean “Anointed One.” Jesus will now begin teaching about is rejection in an attempt to prepare His disciples for the coming events. Rejection : Rejection We have all felt rejection at one time or another. Author unknown Remembering : Remembering Do you remember your greatest disappointment? Maybe as a child a grown up told you they were going to do something for you but they didn’t and you found out later that they never intended to do it. Remember applying for a job and not getting it? What about making a proposal of marriage and being rejected. We have all felt rejected by those we knew, those that should have cared but didn’t. Our self-esteem has been damaged but for the most part we learned to overcome the rejection and move on with life. Hurt : Hurt Christ can offset those rejections and all the hurtful things people say and do to you. Christ himself said, “The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. (Mk 8:31). As you walk with Christ you too must, “suffer many things, and be rejected.” Yes, rejection and suffering hurts but always remember that your heavenly goal is well worth the earthly hurt. The Book of James : The Book of James James 1:2 “Blessed is the man who endures trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him.” You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
