Mark 1:5 Converts : Mark 1:5 Converts 5 And there went out to him all the country of Judea, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. To convert literally mean to do an about-face, a 180-degree turn, from the kind of pride and arrogance that leads to sin such as lying, cheating, stealing, gossiping, etc. The first step in turning to God and away from evil is to admit your sins. Then God will forgive you and help you live the way He wants. John and Jesus Baptism : John and Jesus Baptism John’s Baptism Jesus’ Baptism Baptized with water only. Baptized with water and the Spirit. Symbolically getting ready for the coming of Christ. The first step on the road to Christ’s mission of salvation. Person immersed in water as a symbol of dying to sin. The person is immersed in water & then bathed Holy Spirit. Ceremonial cleansing that can NOT save. The cleansing that does save. 1:6 John the Baptist or Elijah? : 1:6 John the Baptist or Elijah? 6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, and had a leather belt around his waist, and ate locusts and wild honey. John was confused with Elijah, but why? Walk like a duck, quack like a duck, look like a duck, it’s probably a duck. 2 Kings 1:8 “He {Elijah} wore a garment of haircloth, with a belt of leather about his loins.” Haircloth is sometimes translated as Camel’s hair. Elijah and John were both recognized as prophets. Both preached repentance and forgiveness. John’s mission is disclosed in Luke 1:13-17 Both took the Nazirite Vow. Nazirite Vow : Nazirite Vow It seems clear why some people thought that John was the reincarnation of Elijah. John’s parents were told that he was to take the “Nazirite Vow,” but what’s that? (Lk 1:15) 1 Kings 19:4 Elijah also fled to the desert. 2 Kings 1:5 Elijah wore a hairy garment. 1 Kings 21:17-27 People expected Elijah to be the one to announce the arrival of the Messiah. ?5? “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes (Malachi 4:5). Number 6:1-4 The Grape Vine : Number 6:1-4 The Grape Vine drink no vinegar made from wine or strong drink, and shall not drink any juice of grapes or eat grapes, fresh or dried. ? 4? All the days of his separation he shall eat nothing that is produced by the grapevine, not even the seeds or the skins. 1? John Has Set The Stage For Jesus Coming : John Has Set The Stage For Jesus Coming The Old Testament told of a time when God would show His power among the people and give them special blessings. These prophecies were a foretaste of Pentecost (Acts 2), when the Holy Spirit would be sent by Jesus in the form of tongues of fire, and empower all of His followers to preach the gospel. Although born in Bethlehem, Jesus moved to Nazareth when he was a young boy and grew up there (Matthew 2:22-23). Nazareth was a small town in Galilee, located about halfway between the Sea of Galilee and the Mediterranean Sea. Map Nazareth : Map Nazareth Nazareth was an unlikely hometown for the Messiah, Jesus. Even Jesus’ hometown demonstrated His humility and identification with ordinary people. Nazareth was a crossroad for trade routes, and Jesus had contact with people of other cultures.
