Mark 12:38-44 :Mark 12:38-44 The poor widow put in more than all the others.

Slide 2:38? And in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to go about in long robes, and to have salutations in the market places ? 39? and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, ?40? who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.” ? 41? And he sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the multitude putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. ? 42? And a poor widow came, and put in two copper coins, which make a penny. The Holy Bible : Revised Standard Version Second Catholic edition (2006), with the ecclesiastical approval of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Thomas Nelson Publishing for Ignatius Press. Mark 12:38-42

Slide 3:43? And he called his disciples to him, and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. ? 44? For they all contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her whole living.” Mark 12:42-44

12:38-40 Denunciation of the Scribes :12:38-40 Denunciation of the Scribes In teaching his disciples he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes. (12:38) The Scribes were teachers of religious law & were religious hypocrites who had no love for God. True followers of Christ are not distinguished by showy spirituality. Bible reading, praying in public, or following church rituals can be phony if the motive for doing them is to be noticed or honored.

12:41-44 The Poor Widow’s Contribution :12:41-44 The Poor Widow’s Contribution In the Lord’s eyes, this poor widow gave more than all the others, although her gift was the smallest. The value of a gift is not determined by its amount but by the spirit in which it is given. A gift given grudgingly or for recognition lost its value. When you give, remember that gifts of any size are pleasing to God when they are given out of gratitude and in a spirit of generosity.
