The third commandment of the Decalogue recalls the holiness of the Sabbath: "The seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the LORD. (CCC 2168) In speaking of the Sabbath Scripture recalls creation: "For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” (CCC 2169)


The Sabbath Is a Reminder of Liberation From Work. :The Sabbath Is a Reminder of Liberation From Work. (CCC 2170) Scripture also reveals in the Lord's day a memorial of Israel's liberation from bondage in Egypt: ?15? You shall remember that you were a servant in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out thence with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day (Dt. 5:15).


The Sabbath Was Changed to Sunday :The Sabbath Was Changed to Sunday The apostles changed the day of rest from the Sabbath, Saturday, to Sunday because Christ rose from the dead on that day and The Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles on Sunday. Sunday is the Lord’s day because it ought to be devoted to his service because it was that day that he rose from the dead.


There are Requirements for Sunday :There are Requirements for Sunday We must abstain from servile work. Servile work is physical work that is exhausting to body. It is impossible for the fatigued person to pray. All business transactions are prohibited unless it hurts yourself or your family.


Did You Break the Third Commandment? :Did You Break the Third Commandment? Did you attend Mass on Sunday and the Holidays of obligation? Did you go to church for some other reason than to worship? (Meeting friends, or trying to look like “good church going people” to the neighbors?) When you were at church did you distract others from their worship?


Slide 7:While at Church did you participate in the Mass? In the Church community are you a source of strength, support and encouragement to others? Do you take time to rest for yourself and for those you are responsible for?

Have you shown your parents the love, honor, respect and compassion that they deserve? Have you made the effort to understand them in time of disagreement? Do you pray for them? Are you willing to give them encouragement? Are you willing to materially support your parents when they have a need? Are you respectful of ALL your family members? Do you show respect and obedience to those in authority over you? Do you support laws or policies that strengthen the family?


The Fifth Commandment - You shall not kill. :The Fifth Commandment - You shall not kill. Have you taken the life of another or caused someone to die? Have you participated in an act of abortion, infanticide, or euthanasia? Have you encouraged someone else to commit such an act? Have you failed to relieve the suffering of others when you have been able?

Have you willfully injured the reputation of others? Have you ridiculed or insulted others? Do you respect yourself as one deeply loved by God? Have you spread prejudicial ideas about people of certain racial, ethnic, religious, economic or other groupings? Do you respect your health and avoid excesses of physical neglect or obsession? Have you led others into the practice of sin? Do you support movements in society that protect life, promote peace and encourage tolerance?

Do you respect the sanctity of marriage? Do you cause others to be drawn away from the Christian understanding of marriage commitment? Do you accept the value of chastity for unmarried persons? Have you engaged in a sexual activity with someone other than your spouse? Do you intentionally prevent the conception of children by artificial means?


The Seventh Commandment - You shall not steal. :The Seventh Commandment - You shall not steal. Have you taken possession of something that doesn’t belong to you? Have you done damage to the property of others? Have you withheld money or property that is owed to another? Have you caused others to pay excessively for goods and services? Have you cheated another out of property, money or rights? Have you gambled so as to risk not being able to provide for yourself and others? Do you have respect for the natural world and make efforts to conserve resources for future generations? Do you promote fair labor practices and compensation? Do you give to the poor?

Have you committed perjury? Have you damaged the reputation of another? Have you told negative facts about another without reason to do so? Do you discuss the affairs of others? Have you allowed another person to continue doing something wrong? Have you revealed secrets that have been told to you? Have you broken a professional standard of confidentiality in the workplace?


The Ninth Commandment - You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. :The Ninth Commandment - You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. Do you lust for the spouse of another? Do you hold feelings of sexual desire for someone other than your spouse? Do you express lustful thoughts in the presence of others? Are you careless about where you look, what you say, and what you do regarding sexual matters? Do you touch others or make gestures to satisfy your sexual feelings? Do you go to places that deal in sexual materials or behaviors for the purpose of becoming sexually aroused? Do you use pornography?


The Tenth Commandment - You shall not covet your neighbor's goods. :The Tenth Commandment - You shall not covet your neighbor's goods. Do you often wish you had what another has? Envy Are you greedy, desiring more than you need? Do you become envious, becoming sad or frustrated at another’s happiness or success? Do you wish harm or failure to someone who is more successful than yourself? Do you wish misfortune to another so that you can profit by their failure? Do you seek power that may accompany wealth?
