What is a Safe Work Method Statement?

Slide 2:

What is a Safe Work Method Statement and Why Do I Need One? A Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a document created by a subcontractor to manage their High Risk construction Activities. What is a High Risk Activity? A High Risk Activity is any activity that may result in death or bodily harm. This pretty much covers any onsite activity.

Slide 3:

How Can I Prepare My Own? Establish a list of high risk activities that your staff will be performing onsite. For each activity write a sequential procedure and identify the possible risks associated with each step. Each Risk must then be rated and a control measure described. After the control measure there should be a revised risk rating which is law in Queensland now and will affect other states from 1st January 2012.

Slide 4:

Who Do I Give The SWMS’s to? The principal contractor should be in receipt of completed SWMS’s prior to any work commencing. For a SWMS to be completed it must contain your company details including ABN, the site address, be signed and dated. Any employees working under the SWMS should also sign off on the document.

Slide 5:

What Does The Principal Contractor Do? The Principal Contractor must counter sign & date the SWMS’s and keep them onsite for easy reference by workers or checking by a WH&S inspector.
