Premium member Presentation Transcript ORIENTATION ON COMMUNICATION SKILLS: ORIENTATION ON COMMUNICATION SKILLSINTRODUCTION: INTRODUCTION Communication is necessary for: effective formal or informal teaching learning process recognising a good teacher making a student well participated learner Communication is an effective vehicle or tool for teaching - learning process as source of teaching (teacher) and beneficiary of teacher (learner) interact well for proper utilization of teaching - learning objectives.MEANING AND DEFINITIONS : MEANING AND DEFINITIONS MEANING : Communication in its literal sense stands for the act of communing. One can communicate his ideas, thoughts, feelings etc., or transfer any type of information and knowledge to others through this act of communication. For this purpose he may also take the help of some instruments, appliances or devices like telephone, teleprinter , telegram, fax, e-mail, radio broadcasting, telecasting etc. The term communication is derived from the Latin word " communis " meaning "common". In this sense as a verb the term communication stands for an act of sharing commonness or common understanding and experiences with others.Slide 4: DEFINITIONS: Edger Dale: " communication is defined as the sharing of ideas and feelings in a mood of mutuality." Allan : "Communication is the sum total of all the activities a person does to create an understanding in anthers mind. It is the bridge of meaning. It involves a systematic and continuous process of listening, speaking and understanding." W.H.Numan and C.E Summer: "Communication is the exchange of facts, worries, opinions or feelings among two or more persons.”COMPONENTS OF COMMUNICATION: COMPONENTS OF COMMUNICATION 1. The source of communication or sender of the message. 2. Contents of communication or message. 3. Media or Channel of communication. 4. The Receiver of communication. 5. Response material or feedback. 6. Each society develops one or more forms of languages spoken or written words for communicating with each other. Accordingly we have local language, regional language, national language and international language for the required communication among ourselves. The basic units of any language are words and sentences which are governed by rules of grammar. Its components includes - Voice, Pronunciation, Audibility, Stress, Pause, Speed.Slide 8: Non-Verbal Communication : Communication process can also be carried out without the use of any verbal means (written or spoken language). In many cases, such as communication with deaf and dumb, mentally retarded, the persons not knowing the language of the sender or sending a secret message in the commonly coded symbolic expression, it may become a necessity as well as compulsion to make use of the non-verbal communication. In normal situations also non-verbal media is generally used for giving strength and effectiveness to the verbal communication. Its components includes - Posture, Gesture, Eye contact, Movement.WRITTEN COMMUNICATION: : WRITTEN COMMUNICATION: Written communication is foremost important component in teaching. Without writing teaching is not effective. The components are: 1. Content Organization 2. Informative Words 3. Use Of Linking Words 4. Clarity 5. Simplicity 6. Grammar 7. Legibility 8. Uniformity 9. Spacing 10. Adequacy 11. VaguenessBARRIERS OF COMMUNICATION: BARRIERS OF COMMUNICATION 1. Internal barriers of communication. 2. External Barriers of communication. Internal barriers of communication : The root of such barriers lie in the sender and receiver of the message, these are: 1. Poor physical health or illness. 2. Poor background in terms of previous learning and general knowledge about the subject of communication. 3. Poor ,mental health and improper psychological make up like affected with prejudice, inattention, feeling of insecurity, anxiety, depression and dissatisfactory etc. 4. Handicapped in understanding the symbolic expression, verbalism and graphical representation etc.Slide 11: External Barriers of communication : The roots of these barriers lie in the environmental conditions prevailing at the time of communication. These conditions are: 1. Noise and other similar distracters. 2. Polluted environment. 3. Invisibility. 4. Environment and physical discomfort. 5. Improper functioning of the communication channels involving audio visual materials and equipments. 6. The non-cooperative or unhealthy rivalries and competitions among participants in the process of communication. 7.
