National Science Foundation Grades K – 12 Rural Science Education Program

AGENDA:

AGENDA Necessity of the Program Overview Goals of the Program Example Lessons Requirements and Responsibilities of the Fellows Impacts/Benefits of the Program

Did you Know?...:

Did you Know?... Fewer than one-third of all Americans understand the term 'DNA.' Fewer than 15 percent understand the term 'molecule.' Only about 50 percent know that humans didn't live at the time of the dinosaurs. -- Science andamp; Engineering Indicators 2000, published by the National Science Foundation

Slide4:

'The importance and necessity of sharing technical information with non-technical people and helping them to clearly understand it is increasing at an almost incomprehensible rate.' (Chambers, p.119) 'Scientific illiteracy is a big problem in this country. Because of this problem, many people fear things they don't understand.' --Science andamp; Engineering Indicators 2000, published by the National Science Foundation

Program Summary:

Program Summary Teams Consist of : 1 Graduate Student 1 Undergrad 1 Rural School Teacher Teams work together to research, design and implement engaging science lessons

PURPOSE:

PURPOSE To Enrich Grades K-12 Rural School Curriculum by Integrating Hands-on Science Activities PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS: -Alsea -Central Linn Middle School -Dallas High School -Falls City Elementary and HS -Seven Oaks Middle School

GOALS:

GOALS Integrate the Inquiry Cycle and the Nature of Science Make Students Aware of the Science Around Them Encourage Students’ Critical Thinking about the Impacts of Scientific Research on Human Lives Provide an Opportunity for Improved Communication and Teaching Skills in OSU Students

Subjects Covered:

Subjects Covered Biotechnology Ecology Entomology Botany Horticulture Crop and Soil Science Other Mandatory Subjects (Chemistry)

Example Activities:

Example Activities Capture and Classify Insects Vegetable Garden Solving Imaginary Forensic Scenarios using Electrophoresis Results Debates about Ethics of Biotechnology Experimental Design Other Engaging/Hands-On Activities

The Human Cell - Apoptosis:

The Human Cell - Apoptosis Create 'Cell Membrane' with Ring of Desks Label Each Student as an Organelle Infect Cell with Virus - Virus enters through membrane - Sends 'signal' to Mitochondria - Mitochondria passes 'signal' to nucleus - Nucleus instructs cell to Apoptose Discussion: Cancer, Other Diseases

Differences Between Plant and Animal Cells:

Differences Between Plant and Animal Cells 3-D cells made of Play-doh and other objects depicting cell organelles (beads, pasta, candies) Students will then: - Dissect the 'cell' - Hand in a lab report concluding what type of cell they dissected based on the 'cell’s' components

DNA Jewelry:

DNA Jewelry

Eligibility:

Eligibility Student enrolled at OSU (Grad or Undergrad) US Citizen or Permanent Resident PREFERENCE: Those who have attended or have experience with rural schools PhD Students with research experience

Responsibilities of the Fellows:

Responsibilities of the Fellows Attend Summer Training Session - Classroom Management Skills - Inquiry-based Education - IRB Certification Spend 5 hrs/wk Preparing Lessons Spend 10 hrs/wk at Rural Schools Teaching Lessons Register for 1 Credit Seminar Class

IMPACTS:

IMPACTS Students: - Fellow role model - Feeling of being 'special' to be included in program - Exposure to the science around them Fellows: - Learn skills to simplify science concepts - Gain experience working in teams - Acquire patience - Receive Tuition Remission / Cost of Living Teachers: - Improved adult:student ratio - Cover new topics - Implement new activities

Positive Overall Experience:

Positive Overall Experience 'The RSEP helped students to really enjoy science.' -Patty Adams 'The RSEP made me even more excited about teaching science and taking risks in presenting content which might be a bit difficult.' -Carole Stevens Improved Mean Scores on Quizzes Covering Material Taught by the Fellows

Improved Quiz Scores at Both Middle Schools:
