RAHAB: RAHAB FAITH OVERCOMES A FAST PAST
Who is this Rahab woman?: Who is this Rahab woman? Her story takes place after the Israelites had wandered around in the desert for 40 years and are about to invade Jericho and try to make it their home.
Rahab, a resident of Jericho, managed an “inn” that was actually built right into the city walls. The inn served up a little more than a continental breakfast, if you know what I mean…
What did she do?: What did she do? She took in 2 Israelite spies
King of Jericho found out, questioned Rahab
Rahab said they had left, but really she hid them on the roof under some flax
Rahab struck a deal with the spies… by helping save their lives, she wanted to make sure that her and her family members’ lives would be saved.
What did she do?: What did she do? The spies accepted her offer and they told Rahab to use a scarlet rope as a signal for the Israelite soldiers to spare her household
Then Rahab gave the men advice on where they should hide out for the next few days. Then she snuck them out the window, using the same scarlet rope.
Why did she betray her city? Was she stupid or something? : Why did she betray her city? Was she stupid or something? Rahab had heard how God’s power was with the Israelites… how they crossed the Red Sea and how they schooled Sihon and Og, two powerful kings in the east. Rahab KNEW that God had promised the land to the Israelites and that nothing was going to stop them.
She believed in God, referring to him as the Lord and not their Lord.
Rahab’s Strengths : Rahab’s Strengths Resourceful, willing to help others at great cost to herself (she could have been killed for harboring enemy spies)
She protected the men from her own people because the spies were God’s people. Even as a non-Israelite she had a higher loyalty to the living God.
Faith that God was real—and powerful
Rahab’s Weakness: Rahab’s Weakness She was a prostitute
However, it appears as though she turned from her wicked ways. She eventually married a man named Salmon.
TIME FOR A SKIT!: TIME FOR A SKIT!
Slide10: APPLAUSE
So what happened to Jericho and Rahab?: So what happened to Jericho and Rahab? The Israelites marched around the city once a day for six days. (Imagine what the Jerichonians were thinking!)
On the seventh day, they marched around the city seven times and then blew their trumpets
The city walls fell
The Israelites burned the whole city and everything in it, except for the silver and gold which were put into the Lord’s House.
So what happened to Jericho and Rahab?: So what happened to Jericho and Rahab? Oh yeah… they also spared Rahab the prostitute with her family and all who belonged to her.
Rahab lived among the Israelites and settled down with her husband Salmon. They became the great grandparents of King David.
She is one of only two women listed in the Hall of Faith in Hebrews 11. She was so convinced that God was real, she gave up everything and started a new life with God’s people.
What does this mean to ME,O wise teacher? : What does this mean to ME, O wise teacher? Rahab made a confession of faith based on what she knew about the Lord… You too can also confess that God is Lord of all. Acknowledge the saving grace of the Lord and invite him to become YOUR Lord.
Do you really believe that the God we worship here at FBC is real? Do you believe he’s the most powerful being in the universe?
