Premium member Presentation Transcript Slide 1: National Resources for Your Prevention Efforts Beth DeRicco, Ph.D. Associate Director Slide 2: Prevention in Higher Education 1987 The Network for the Elimination of Substance Abuse on College and University Campuses 1988 Congress commits $40 million for research in AOD abuse 1989 Groups of nationally know researchers practitioners, and federal agencies gather to determine a research agenda. 1983 Inter-Association Task Force on Alcohol and Other Substance Abuse Issues 1989 Drug Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments 1993 The Safe and Drug Free Schools office authorizes funding for The Higher Education Center Slide 3: The Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools (OSDFS) administers, coordinates, and recommends policy for improving quality and excellence of programs and activities that are designed to: Provide financial assistance for drug and violence prevention activities and activities that promote the health and well being of students in elementary and secondary schools, and institutions of higher education. Activities may be carried out by State and local educational agencies and by other public and private nonprofit organizations. The Network serves as a liaison between the U.S. Department of Education and member institutions as well as other higher education professional organizations. Member institutions encourage and enhance local, state, regional, and national initiatives through a commitment to shared standards for policy development, educational strategies, enforcement, evaluation, and community collaboration. Slide 8: The Center for College Health and Safety assists colleges and universities in developing, implementing, and evaluating prevention policies and programs that address a broad range of health and safety issues at institutions of higher education. Slide 9: To assist ED in serving IHEs in developing and implementing policies and programs that will foster students’ academic and social development and promote campus and community safety by preventing the harmful effects of alcohol and other drug use and violence among college students. Create a health-promoting normative environment. Limit alcohol availability. Increase the development and enforcement of campus policies and state and local laws. Restrict the marketing and promotion of alcoholic beverages both on and off campus.
