Splints, Slings and Casts in SMALL ANIMAL Surgery :

Splints, Slings and Casts in SMALL ANIMAL Surgery Riasat Wasee Ullah DVM

Definitions :

Definitions Bandage a strip or roll of gauze or other material for wrapping or binding a body part Dressing any of various materials used for covering and protecting a wound Sling a bandage or suspensory used for supporting a body part

Slide 4:

Splint a ridged or flexible appliance for fixation of displaced or movable body parts Cast a stiff dressing or casing used to immobilize body parts

Splints :

Splints A splint is a medical device for the immobilization of limbs or of the spine

Spoon splint and rod splints :

Spoon splint and rod splints

Spica splint :

Spica splint Immobilized the shoulder or hip joint in addition to move distal joints e.g. extremities Also use as humeral and femoral fracture Anesthesia must Cause few complication because of short term use Abrasions can develop in axilla and inguinal region specially in fore limb

Slide 8:

A-roll cotton incorporate the thorax and limb B-splint rod apply C-completed spica splint

Schroeder-thomas splint :

Schroeder-thomas splint Aluminum splint rod and bandage material use in this splint. To provide traction at a fracture site and immobilization of a joint in a limb

Sling :

Sling It is the bandage to support fractured limb, consist of a wide piece of bandage

velpeau sling :

velpeau sling The velpeau sling maintain the carpus, elbow and shoulder joint in a flexed position and prevents wait bearing of the fore limb Mainly for shoulder joint May cause necrosis if compression more

Velpeau sling :

Velpeau sling

Ehmer sling :

Ehmer sling Use in pelvic limb Wait bearing, maintain limited degree of the internal rotation of hip joint and abduction of the limb

Direction for ehmer sling :

Direction for ehmer sling

Pelvic limb sling (robinson sling) :

Pelvic limb sling (robinson sling) Prevent wait bearing on the hind limb but allows relatively free movement. Not use as primary stabilization e.g. the injury Excellent adjunct to surgical repair Use in Healing fracture of femur and tibia Cox femoral and stifle joint surgeries

Procedure :

Procedure Elastic gauze/elastic tape Applied to abdomen and caudal thorax to create four inch wide, that anchors the sling to the torso

Pelvic limb sling :

Pelvic limb sling

Hobbles :

Hobbles Tape strips to allow wait bearing and walking of the hind limb Tarsal hobble Just above the tarsus and provide mild support and assistance in walking to animals recovering from pelvic trauma. Prevents abduction of the limb at the tarsus

Procedure :

Procedure Tarsal hobbles doubling or adhesive tapes to form a strip of sufficient length Loosely wrapped around both hind limbs Sufficient space for walking

Tarsal hobble :

Stifle hobbles :

Stifle hobbles

Cast :

Cast A cast is the limb splint constructed with light padding and casting tape applied circumferentially to enclose extremity rigidity Shoulder and hip joint are not immobilized Open wound are not covered Window is form on the wound

Cast material :

Cast material Plaster impregnated casting tape Inexpensive and strong Resin impregnated casting tape If cast become wet dermatitis and tissue maceration develop

Synthetic casting :

Synthetic casting Fiber glass or polyester fabrics impregnated with water-activated polyurethane resin Expensive

Application :

Application General anesthesia Reduction – retention- alignment- immobilize Affected leg up Tape stirrups are applied to the medial and lateral surface One layer cast stockinet Beginning with toe, cast padding wrapped around the leg

Cont… :

Cont… Casting tape immersed in cold water Care should be taken in casting tape to avoid wrinkles. Cast saw is used for removal of fiber glass cast

Slide 29:

A-tape stirrups and stockinet apply B-cast padding is applied C-first layer of casting tape is applied

Slide 30:

D-stockinette and tape stirrups E-second layer of casing tape

Modification of cast :

Modification of cast Half cast Shorter than full leg Not above elbow or stifle also called as walking cast or short leg For metatarsus and metacarpus Walking bar A walking bar may be applied to any cast by countering aluminum splint rod to the end of the cast and taping in a place.

Walking bar cast :

Walking bar cast Walking bar applied to prevent any weight bearing on toes
