Game theory has conventionally been used to analyse decision making in competitive situations such as a market duopoly prospect theory offers predictions about how decision makers deal with risk whilst game theory suggests ideas about situations where one party's decisions has implications about the other's. Game Theory (Example) The classic game theory example concerns two prisoners. They are accused of committing a serious crime. The problem is how should they respond to questioning by their captors, bearing in mind that each is to be questioned separately? If both confess, they will each receive a moderate sentence of, say, five years’ imprisonment. If both prisoners plead innocence to the serious crime, both will be convicted of a less serious offence and receive a sentence of, say, three years each. However, if one confesses and gives evidence against the other who continues to plead innocence, the prisoner confessing will receive a light sentence, say two years, while the prisoner pleading innocence will receive the heaviest sentence possible, say seven years. These possible outcomes are shown in the matrix below. The risk of pleading not guilty is a longer jail sentence for both. Bk2 – Ch3, p 34

Tiny domestic operations which also start by concentrating on small niche markets - These people are unlikely to be able to afford some of your more bureaucratic systems. 3. Local players who confine themselves to particular geographical territories - These may be spectacularly successful in their own locale but too small to appear on your corporate radar. 5. New entrants using different business models - This is where even world-class operations can get blind-sided. Mintzberg also argues that organisations need scenarios instead of forecasts and contingency planning instead of 'deterministic planning'; fallacy of detachment - a reliance on 'hard data' and performance reports etc rather than and in addition to the 'soft data' (intuition and local knowledge) often held by line managers; and fallacy of formalisation - analysis is not necessarily synthesis i.e. a sum of the individual parts. Networking Cooperative networks have proved particularly important in the development of high-tech industries such as information technology and bio-technology. Informal interactions of people with a common background and interest informal networks are then increasingly valuable as a means to protect against becoming too inward-looking. Regional Development Agencies, Trade Associations, Local Universities and even Alumni Associations can all play a vital role in disseminating good ideas and good practice. Bk3 – Ch6, p 133-134

Franchising: 

Franchising A franchise offers the ability of an individual or a major company in its own right, to operate a business using the brand-name and methods of a franchisor. The key to the success, for both parties, is the sort of consistency underwritten by the brand-name and enabled by either the ‘products’ (in the case of retail operations such as The Body Shop, KFC or McDonald’s) or the methods used to deliver the service (many of the hotels within the major worldwide brands are actually run as franchises). The franchisee has to buy a ‘package’ from the franchisor. This might involve anything from a box of samples to a shop premises to a major hotel. Along with such tangible assets comes a rigorous training package, successful completion of which gives the franchisor the confidence to allow the use of its brand. Marketing in franchises is often very tightly proscribed and innovation thus takes a back seat to consistency. Innovation is most likely directed from the centre. Bk3 – Ch6, p 141

Supply Chain: 

Supply Chain As companies and projects become larger and more reliant on complex resources, timescales and costs the need for more respondent and cost effective supplier chains became more evident. Companies like M&S, Benetton and Nike have all developed well known supply chains where certain parts of the organisations business are 'vertically disaggregated' (i.e. outsourced under the brand name of the outsourcing organisation) The danger of this practice, as witness with M&S, is that the outsourced supplier sometimes tend to become heavily reliant on the outsourcing organisation for custom and income. When that custom is no longer required the consequence for the outsourced supplier can be devastating and, possibly, financially ruinous. Bk3 – Ch6, p 142
