The County of San Diego Salutes Volunteers of the Year 2006 : The County of San Diego Salutes Volunteers of the Year 2006 Wednesday, April 26, 2006


Slide2 : JOE DIAZ ALTERNATE PUBLIC DEFENDER Timothy A. Chandler Matthew Mohun Volunteer Coordinator Joe Diaz, a volunteer Investigative Intern for Alternate Public Defender, assisted attorneys and investigators in conducting court record checks, serving subpoenas and obtaining school, medical or other client records, as well as case organization, research and other requested tasks.  


Slide3 : CAROL SUGGS ANIMAL SERVICES Dawn Danielson, Director Heidi Burke, Volunteer Coordinator Carol Suggs is a dedicated volunteer, a premier “foster mom”, taking in neo-natal kittens and puppies, bottle feeding, nursing, and socializing them for adoption. Additionally, Carol helps with laundry, dog bathing, posting photographs of stray animals on the website, and other duties necessary to keep adoptable pets active and healthy.


Slide4 : MARJIE JOHNSON ASSESSOR/RECORDER/COUNTY CLERK Gregory J. Smith, County Clerk Rowena Reno, Volunteer Coordinator Marjie Johnson, as a volunteer, performs wedding ceremonies, greets customers, assists staff at the information counter, and performs other clerical duties as needed. She has performed approximately 555 civil wedding ceremonies. She is very conscientious about her work and projects kindness and care with each couple making them feel special.  


Slide5 : CHARLOTTE GETZ FARM & HOME ADVISOR Terrell Salmon, Director Colleen Tschumperlin, Volunteer Coordinator Charlotte Getz created the School Gardens program in San Diego County through the UC Master Gardener Association. She is responsible for the development of over 140 school gardens used to teach biology, math, and language arts, in schools of all economic levels.  


Slide6 : Alexis Kleckner is a committed volunteer with 422 hours to date, copying audio, video, film evidence, record keeping, preparing court displays; and assisting over 40 attorneys with their day-to-day technical needs. Kristin Rhoades prepares and mails out domestic violence contact letters. She also maintains and updates the list of therapists used in referring victims of violent crimes. “Lee” Tusa does daily filing, and maintains current crime reports including domestic violence, child molestation and sexual assault in felony and misdemeanor matters. Slide7 : KEVIN GRINSTEAD Health & Human Services Agency Jean Shepard, Director Shirley Chin, Volunteer Coordinator Kevin Grinstead was instrumental in researching and developing an in-depth exit survey for those leaving HHSA employment or transferring internally. He created a program which allows future users to conduct quantitative analysis on surveys and focus groups. He has given over 500 hours of volunteer service.


Slide8 : MARKOV MANALO Health & Human Services Agency Jean Shepard, Director Lori Thibault, Volunteer Coordinator Markov Manalo has used his own experiences to give strength and hope to others. He has been instrumental in the creation of the new Morena Activity Center (MAC) for clients at N. Central Clinic. His success has earned him a Community Living Aid position at this Clinic.


Slide9 : Pam Hoye has served on the advisory boards for In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) for many years as a consumer representative. She has also participated on the Long Term Care Integration workgroup. Pam works tirelessly towards the betterment of IHSS clients and providers. Jack Lester is the administrator of sixty (60) volunteers at the San Diego Police Department Eastern Division Retired and Senior Volunteer Patrol. He also patrols the community four days a month. He is also active in Senior Volunteer Patrol Coordinator meetings and events. Faith Lewis has been instrumental in the development of several programs, such as the Alpine Kiwanis Respite Night for East County Foster Families, which allowed the annual Holiday Adopt a Family Program to serve more families. She has also been the anchor of the Intergenerational Program which matches senior volunteers to Foster Homes in the East County. Slide10 : JOHN BASSEY Health & Human Services Agency Jean Shepard, Director Jannette Kutchins, Volunteer Coordinator As a foster youth mentor, John Bassey offers a balanced lifestyle discussing past problems and future dreams. He assists them with issues of self-esteem, academic excellence, goal setting, responsibility and independent living skills, such as opening bank accounts and job applications.


Slide11 : CATHY LAPOINT Health & Human Services Agency Jean Shepard, Director Ardyth Shaw, Volunteer Coordinator Cathy loves working with children and volunteered in a kindergarten class two days a week for the last eight years at the Polinsky Center. As a nursery volunteer, she loves holding and playing with the babies and looks forward to seeing them each week.


Slide12 : Katherine Smith-Brooks has worked for innovation of mental health services, in North County. She has received numerous awards, including the “Exemplary Family and Patient Advocate Award”; proclamations from County and State; and was named California Senate Woman of the Year, in 2001. For the past 12 years, Phil Harris, Founder and Director of Friends and Family Community Connection has mobilized organizations to provide North County communities with over 27 free services and support programs for disadvantaged children, youth, adults and families. Last year, he worked, tirelessly, relocating Hurricane Katrina victims. As a bilingual volunteer, Natasha Cridler has been invaluable in assisting the nurses in the absence of the Social Service Aide or accompanying the nurses on home visits. Slide13 : SUSAN CASEY DAVIS LIBRARY Jose Aponte, County Librarian Ellen Zyroff, Volunteer Coordinator Susan Casey Davis has done extraordinary volunteer work at the Poway Branch library, including the annual essay contest; the widely popular annual Harry Potter Birthday Party, one of the biggest civic events in Poway; and the monthly “Afternoon with the Author,” lunch program. Last year the library float that she created won 1st place in the City’s annual Poway Days parade.


Slide14 : ANNICE SHIELDS REGISTRAR OF VOTERS Mikel Haas, DIRECTOR Ronda Levin, Volunteer Coordinator Annice Shields has volunteered at the Registrar of Voters, since the early 1990s, assisting with election night activities, for each primary and general election. She worked behind the scenes, examining ballots, de-processing election supplies, attending the front counter and phones, and providing election night results to the media.


Slide15 : WAYNE LUNDY PARKS & RECREATION Renee Bahl, Director Cheryl Wegner, Volunteer Coordinator Wayne Lundy cares for the Otay Lakes County Park as his “front yard” by maintaining the landscape, providing outstanding service to park patrons, and overseeing volunteer trail crews. He has assisted with special events, supervising Donavan work crew projects and leading many park beautification events throughout the year with I Love A Clean San Diego and Eagle Scouts.


Slide16 : DAWN PETTIJOHN DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS John Snyder, Director Kirsten Aaboe-Hope, Volunteer Coordinator Dawn Pettijohn fights fires, works medical calls, conducts a training academy, and does administrative work for two volunteer departments: Elfin Forest and San Pasqual. Due to her initiative, a grant from the Tribal Gaming Commission was secured to cover dispatch costs for FY 2005/06.


Slide17 : TIM GRIFFIN Probation Vincent Iaria, Director Maureen Connelly, Volunteer Coordinator Tim Griffin’s unwavering commitment have earned Tim Griffin the vice-chair’s seat on the Board of Directors of Volunteers In Probation, Inc., supporting both the Volunteer Office and the Probation Personnel Office, through data entry, scheduling appointments, file maintenance, extensive telephone work, and mail processing.


Slide18 : RANDY GRIMM SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT Bill Kolender, SHERIFF Sgt. Julie Sutton, Volunteer Coordinator The firestorm of 2003 revealed a serious lack of training in fire specific survival and evacuation protocols, planning, communication, command and control procedures for County law enforcement personnel. In response to this need, Randy Grimm volunteered 2,100 hours of his advertising expertise to create and produce a comprehensive training DVD, incorporating actual footage of the fires, and law enforcement personnel.


Slide19 : John Perroni, a volunteer certified intern, under the supervision of attorneys, performed a variety of tasks including: legal research, conducting misdemeanor trials, arguing motions, counseling clients, and negotiating case settlements with the court and prosecution. Kasia Donohue, also a volunteer certified intern, at the Public Defender Adult Criminal Division, has served at the department’s Dependency unit and with the California Innocence Project, researching claims of innocence and drafting writs of habeas corpus.
