The Interview: Suits & Dress Shirts: The Interview: Suits & Dress Shirts DO’s Always wear a dress shirt & a matching business suit Make sure suit & dress shirt is wrinkle free Invest in good quality suit, KEY is COST PER FACTOR Always color coordinate entire ensemble Wear safe colors e.g. Navy Blue, White, Grey, Beige, Black and other solid colors


The Interview: Suits & Dress Shirts: The Interview: Suits & Dress Shirts DON’Ts Wear colors that are too flashy TIP: If unsure then go with your instinct or ask a friend Avoid clothing articles that are too tight e.g. shirts, pants, skirts TIP: If underwear line shows, shirt button is popping open or if you get a wedgy, then it’s TOO TIGHT!


ATTENTION LADIES!!!: ATTENTION LADIES!!! DO’s Always wear panty hose with skirts DON’Ts Wear skirt lengths more than 1 inch above the knee TIP: Keep in mind when you sit, your skirt length shortens considerably Avoid skirt slits that are too revealing (use own judgement) NO “Clubbing” pants e.g. tight spandex, slinky pants


ATTENTION GENTLEMEN!!!: ATTENTION GENTLEMEN!!! DO’s Wear a conservative tie NOTE: Tip of the tie should sit slightly above the belt buckle Be clean shaven DON’Ts Wear white socks TIP: Try to match socks with belt Wear a tie that is too wide or too narrow


FABRICS: FABRICS Stay away from velvet, vinyl, spandex, shiny, furry, slinky materials Fabrics recommended are those that do not wrinkle easily TIP 1: Purchase fabrics that have a small percentage of lycra that adds comfort and resists creases. Suggested fabrics are polyester, wool (suits), cotton shirts TIP 2: When purchasing a suit, twist the fabric of the sleeves and hold it in place for 10 seconds, if it wrinkles then think twice about the purchase


SHOES: SHOES POLISH and SHINE your shoes! Always wear socks TIP: Make sure socks are high enough to cover skin when sitting down You should be able to walk comfortably in your shoes i.e. Heels should not be too high LADIES should stay away from chunky, platform, or knee high boots e.g. NO go go boots when wearing shorter length skirts GENTLEMEN should stay away from steel toes and other rugged shoes NEVER wear open toe shoes!


ACCESSORIES: ACCESSORIES DO’s Bring a clipboard Bring a pen Bring a pad of paper Bring a briefcase (optional) Bring 2 copies of resume Bring references DON’Ts Wear too much jewelry (e.g. too many rings, necklaces, bracelets) NO pagers and cellular phones Carry big, bulky bags Wear hats, baseball caps


HAIR & MAKEUP: HAIR & MAKEUP Style hair as conservatively as possible Do not dye hair color too flashy e.g. red, green, etc. Wear as little makeup as possible Don’t wear brightly colored lipsticks or eye shadows, too much blush because the interviewer might not like it or it may accidentally get on your clothing


PERSONAL HYGIENE: PERSONAL HYGIENE ALWAYS take a shower before the interview Wear antiperspirant in case you get nervous Brush your teeth before the interview Don’t chew gum, eat a breath mint instead Don’t wear heavy smelling perfumes/cologne, it may irritate the interviewer Have clean finger nails and hands Stay away from nail polish if possible, especially brightly colored ones (e.g. synthetic nails)


FIRST DAY OF WORK: FIRST DAY OF WORK Try to wear a business suit and a crisp dress shirt on the first day of work. (This applies to both Business & Business Casual environments) NOTE: Dressing professionally on the 1st day is ALWAYS important because you will likely be introduced to most of your co-workers, including your boss on the first day!


BUSINESS ATTIRE: BUSINESS ATTIRE LADIES This includes suits, or jackets and blouse with either dress pants and/or skirts, dress shoes/heels GENTLEMEN This includes Dress shirt, tie, pants, jacket, dress shoes


BUSINESS CASUAL WEAR: BUSINESS CASUAL WEAR LADIES Minimum requirements include blouses or sweaters, dress pants, skirt or dress, business shorts & dress shoes GENTLEMEN Minimum requirements include dress shirt with collars, plain or patterned knit t-shirts only if worn under a sports jacket, slacks and dress shoes or loafers


BUSINESS CASUAL WEAR: BUSINESS CASUAL WEAR NOTE: The definition of “BUSINESS CASUAL” wear may vary between office environments, some may be more formal and others are more informal TIP: It is safer to dress more formally on the first few days and observe how your co-workers dress and then dress accordingly after you get a good indication of how everyone dresses at work


CASUAL WEAR: CASUAL WEAR Casual wear includes denim shirts, t-shirts, sweatshirts, running shoes and sandals NOTE: Sweat/track suits, beach wear, frayed, patched or ripped clothing, halter/tank/tube tops, as well as clothing with offensive language and/or images are NOT APPROPRIATE at ANY TIME!
