Most have a good general understanding of most facility issues, but limited knowledge of any one area.

Routes to Facility Management careers for non-professionals… : Routes to Facility Management careers for non-professionals… Tradespersons may obtain trade positions within an organization and move into supervisory positions within their trade. Some obtain additional training and move to management positions. (Plumber, carpenter, etc.)
Staffpersons (nurses, secretaries, etc.) may be given FM responsibilities (especially during a move), excel in these positions, and are offered positions managing some aspect of the facility. (Move Manager, Telecom coordinator, etc.)

Internship Requirements… : Internship Requirements… Total of 400 hours.
Should provide diverse FM experience.
Internship plan approved by internship coordinator prior to commitment to internship.
Intern sends weekly reports to internship coordinator.
Internship coordinator may visit site.
Supervisor at internship site provides two evaluations of intern to internship coordinator and contacts internship coordinator if problems with intern.
Intern completes final report after internship.
Internship Process… : Internship Process… New sites submit plan for internship to internship coordinator for approval. (anytime)
Internship coordinator sends reminders announcing internship season via email distribution list in Fall Semester (for planning purposes) as well as early in Winter Semester (to remind sites to send announcements).
Approved sites submit job descriptions with intern application requirements to internship coordinator (January – April)
Interested interns apply directly to site.
Selection of intern is site’s decision.
Salary negotiated between site and intern.
Range $8-$17/hour (near home lower end of range)
There are unpaid internships, but few…students usually avoid these…few placements.
Internships typically occur from mid-May to mid-August.
