Talking PowerPoint: Turning silent slides into Talkies Jim Owens Departments of Pediatrics, Neurology, and Radio Shack

Objectives:

Objectives At the conclusion of this presentation you should: Know how to use PowerPoint’s narration function Know one way to generate a stand-alone audio file (a podcast, if you will) Recognize some advantages and drawbacks of these techniques Be well fed

Outline:

Outline Why I started doing this and how I use these techniques The “nuts and bolts” of creating a presentation My experience (Pros and Cons) Your thoughts, comments, anecdotes, witticisms, jokes, and rotten fruit.

Why:

Why Core Neurology clerkship is a 4 week required rotation for medical students Approximately 16 key topics and at least 4 supplemental topics to cover (epilepsy, stroke, dementia, etc…) Only 6 lectures total when I took over 3 years ago But I love lectures so… crept up to 16+

More about Why:

More about Why Turns out students don’t all love lectures!

A “High Tech” Solution:

A “High Tech” Solution Produced narrated PowerPoint presentations or “lecture podcasts” Posted them on BECON Gave students a “suggested study schedule” Held twice weekly “review sessions” BECON demonstration…

PowerPoint Narration:

PowerPoint Narration Equipment needed: Microphone Sense of humor

Podcast Production:

Podcast Production Equipment needed: Microphone mp3 player or voice recorder Optional equipment: mp3 file editing program

General Pros and Cons:

General Pros and Cons Flexible scheduling Saves faculty time Allows review of content Familiar format for students Only works if they use it! Uncomfortable for some lecturers Face to face time is very valuable Easy to lose touch with material Copyright issues etc…

Narration vs Podcasting:

Narration vs Podcasting Narration Audio linked to slide automatically Can only speed up by skipping material Easy to change narration on a slide Size 40-60 MB Podcasting Need cue to advance slide Can listen to material at own pace Requires additional software for editing mp3 file 40-60 MB Students seem divided with regards to their preference

Future Plans:

Future Plans A blend of face to face and “online” lectures Use podcasts for convenience Develop mp3 editing capacity “Refresh” lectures every quarter Implement weekly online quizzes to ensure that the students are keeping pace Spin off my own record label
