LAST Application software Software That is designed and written for a specific personal, organization or processing task, such as graphics software. This includes database programs, word processors and spreadsheet. Sits on top of system software because it is unable to run without the operating system and system utilities. It is used by user for day to day tasks. It has nothing to do with the internal operations of computer. It is easy to create, modify and understand. It can be developed by any person with some common over programming. No or very little knowledge of computer internal structure is required to develop application programs. It is usually developed in high level languages.

System Software Consists of low-level programs that interact with the computer at a very basic level. This includes operating system, compliers and utilities for managing computer resources. It runs by its own without the help of application software. Its controls and co-ordinate the operations of computer system. It is hard to create, modify and understand. It can be developed by any person with some command over programming. Complete Knowledge of computer internal structure is required to developed system programs. It is usually developed in low level languages.
