In 1872, the 4th ward was already a vital part of Raleigh

Slide 2: 

It spanned from Fayetteville St and Cabarrus to the outskirts of town

Slide 3: 

But life in the fourth ward was centered on the corner of South and McDowell

It started with the Freedman’s School and the Emancipation Proclamation

In 1863 all slaves in the United States were declared free In 1865 the Civil War ended and a new era began in Raleigh

These new citizens had very few resources

It evolved into the Washington Graded School The First African American Elementary School in Raleigh

By 1874 black voters were changing the political landscape of Raleigh and the 4th Ward got its name.. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th To disenfranchise black voters in 1875 city leaders gerrymandered Raleigh into 4 wards
