Who Is Eligible?: Who Is Eligible? U.S. Citizens Those with Bachelor’s degree by grant start. Applicants who have not earned a degree, but have extensive professional study or experience, may be considered. Foreign language ability as required by host country and/or project needs Good health


Who Is NOT Eligible?: Who Is NOT Eligible? Non U.S. citizens (including permanent residents) Ph.D. degree-holders Previous U.S. Student Fulbright grantees In some instances, dual citizens or applicants currently residing in the country to which they wish to apply (check website country descriptions)

Fulbright Full Grant: Fulbright Full Grant Individually-designed academic, study, research, or artistic project Projects may include university coursework, research, or professional training in the arts Guidelines may vary by country – check the website for details “Thinking of Applying”  “Participating Countries”


English Teaching Assistantship (ETA): English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) Grantees assigned to teach conversational English in schools or universities throughout host country Grantee-designed project emphasizing community engagement Over 20 countries (in Asia, Europe, and South America) offer Fulbright ETA grants


Islamic Civilization Grant: Islamic Civilization Grant Full grant to enhance the knowledge and understanding of Islamic culture Project must focus on an aspect of Islamic culture Post-grant outreach plan required with application


Language Training Initiative: Language Training Initiative Pre-grant training covering up to six months of study in Turkish, Arabic, or the Indic languages Funding is only available to grantees who have requested additional training in their project statements and demonstrate need for training Language training happens prior to or concurrent with the beginning of the grant term

Applications in Creative and Performing Arts: Applications in Creative and Performing Arts Over thirty fields of study in the creative and performing arts Supplemental materials must be submitted: Photographs, Slides, Portfolios CDs, cassettes DVDs, VHS tapes Writing Samples (Creative Writers only) See website for eligible arts fields and specific requirements for supplementary materials (Randin Graves - Australia)

Statement of Proposed Research or Study (Full Grants): Statement of Proposed Research or Study (Full Grants) Two page essay that answers the questions: what, where, how, when, and why Demonstrates knowledge of the field of study Demonstrates awareness of resources in host country Any potential concern about project feasibility or your ability should be addressed directly


Statement of Proposed Research or Study (ETA Grant): Statement of Proposed Research or Study (ETA Grant) One to two page essay that explains reasons for applying for a teaching assistantship, applicant’s qualifications and experiences that relate to the overseas assignment. The expected benefits from the assignment and the benefit of the experience upon return to the U.S. and future career goals. Description of a small, supplemental research project (focused on community involvement) Not site-specific Demonstrates sincere desire to teach English to non-native speakers


Letters of Affiliation: Letters of Affiliation From host country contact willing to advise/mentor you while conducting your Fulbright project Can be a professional at a university, laboratory, library, community organization Must be a signed letter on institutional letterhead indicating support of applicant and project ETAs DO NOT make affiliations


Things to Consider: Things to Consider Is your project feasible? Do you have/can you secure a solid affiliation? Do you have requisite language skills? Have you demonstrated your ability to carry out your proposed project?

SELECTION PROCESS: SELECTION PROCESS


Deadlines: Deadlines Enrolled candidates submit applications to campus committee by campus deadline for review Campus Deadline IIE Application Deadline Sept/Oct October Online submission deadline: Oct 20, Hard copy: Oct 23 Campuses send enrolled students’ applications to IIE at deadline, at-large applicants submit directly to IIE Applications are processed at IIE and sent to National Screening Committee members


Selection Timeline: Selection Timeline National Screening Committees Nov/Dec Screening committees review applications for a given country/field. They recommend candidates for selection Fulbright Commissions/Embassies Jan-May The Fulbright Commissions and U.S. Embassies in the host countries select principal and alternate candidates J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB) Feb-May The presidentially-appointed FSB has final approval of candidates and notifies candidates of selection
