Premium member Presentation Transcript Slide 1: Project Harar special surgical mission for children with severe facial injury Rebuilding faces, changing lives Addis Ababa, Ethiopia August-September 2009 Project Harar Ethiopia Registered charity no. 1094272 Slide 2: They came a long way… Slide 3: …from the town of Harar, in eastern Ethiopia, Slide 4: and poor and remote villages surrounding it Slide 5: all the way to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital Slide 6: with the help of Project Harar and a new hospital. Slide 7: Shege Safiya Fatiya Our 18 young patients Slide 8: Fatiya, 16 years old “I stopped going to school after fourth grade because of the way I looked. “I live with my brothers and sisters as our parents died a few years ago. We cultivate the land and sell the wicker baskets I make. “Once my nose is reconstructed, I want to go back to school and study medicine.” Slide 9: Huluka Sami Zuber Slide 10: Project Harar always helps a parent or guardian to accompany each child to hospital. My family abandoned me at the hospital. “I like being around the other children and playing with all the toys in this hospital. “When I'm better, I want to carry on with school and become a doctor.” Slide 15: Asliya Slide 16: Meyrama “This is the second time I have come to Addis Ababa to receive treatment for my noma injuries with the help of Project Harar. “This year, I chose not to have surgery again, but I would like some new teeth. The doctors working with Project Harar have arranged for a denture to be made in London and brought to Ethiopia.” Slide 17: Zakir Zakir is a survivor of noma, a terrible infection caused by malnutrition which he contracted as a baby. Slide 42: There was time for learning… Slide 47: …and there was time for treats Slide 50: For the girls, the days spent in hospital were their first opportunity to share common experiences of living with a disfigurement. Slide 52: For some children, this was only the beginning of the journey…and Project Harar is committed to ensuring they receive all the treatment they need. Once they recover, the rest of our patients will be ready to begin their new life.
