Fatiya, 16 years old “I stopped going to school after fourth grade because of the way I looked.   “I live with my brothers and sisters as our parents died a few years ago. We cultivate the land and sell the wicker baskets I make.   “Once my nose is reconstructed, I want to go back to school and study medicine.”

Abdella, 12 years old “I was attacked by a hyena four years ago. My family abandoned me at the hospital.   “I like being around the other children and playing with all the toys in this hospital.   “When I'm better, I want to carry on with school and become a doctor.”

Meyrama “This is the second time I have come to Addis Ababa to receive treatment for my noma injuries with the help of Project Harar. “This year, I chose not to have surgery again, but I would like some new teeth. The doctors working with Project Harar have arranged for a denture to be made in London and brought to Ethiopia.”

For the girls, the days spent in hospital were their first opportunity to share common experiences of living with a disfigurement.
