DISASTERS AND THEIR MANAGEMENT ! PRESENTED SIDDHARTH BHATIA BY- TO- Sr.regi

Slide 3:

INTRODUCTION SINCE THE LAST DECADE OUR EARTH AND ALL THE ORGANISMS SURVIVING IN IT HAS BEARED MANY NATURAL DISASTERS .TODAY THROUGH MY PRESENTATION I WOULD LIKE TO EXPREES MY VIEWS REGARDING THE VARIOUS DISASTERS TAKING PLACE TODAY IN THE WORLD AND THE PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN AGAINST THEM……. … SO HERE WE START……………….. I HOPE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE THIS PRESENTATION………………

Slide 4:

CYCLONIC DISASTER The term “cyclone” here IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE TROPICAL CYCLONIC STORMS WICH OCCUR WITHIN THE SEAS OR THE OCEANS.THE BACKGROUND PICTURE WHICH YOU ALL CAN SEE IS OF THE CYCLONE WHICH HIT ANDHRA PRADESH IN MAY 1990.THE SPEED OF THIS CYCLONE WAS ABOUT 250 KM/HOUR.IT AFFECTED ABOUT 6,000 VILLLAGES IN THE EASTERLY INDIAN COASTAL AREAS.ALMOST 1,000 PERSONS WERE KILLED IN THIS DISASTER .ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF SUCH TRAGEDY IS CYCLONE KATRINA occurred on august 23,2005 near Bahamas. it killed upto 1836 people mainly from Mississippi…………………

Slide 5:

Precautions Against Cyclone AVOID FLOODWATER AND BE CAREFULABOUT ABOUT SNAKES BITES. KNOW THE ROUTES AND LOCATIONS OF SAFE SHELTERS. KEEP THE PHONE NUMBERS OF HOSPITALS ,POLICE,HELP AGENCIES,etc. LEAVE YOUR HOMES OR SCHOOL BUILDINGS ND MOVE TO AN AREA OF HIGH ALTITUDE. AFTER THE CYCLONE,CHECKGAS LEAKESAND DRYTHE ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES. KEEP BAMBOO STICKS TO WARD OFF SNAKES. KEEP THE FIRST AID READY. LISTEN TO THE RADIO AND WATCH TELEVISION FOR THE WARNING AND ADVICE.

Slide 6:

TSUNAMI IS A JAPANESE WORD FOR ‘HARBOUR WAVES’ OR LARGE OCEAN WAVES NORMALLY GENERATED BY EARTHQUAKES OR UNDERSEA VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS ON THE OCEAN FLOOR.MOST TSUNAMIS OCCUR IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN.AT LEAST 22 COUNTRIES ALONG THE RIM OF THE PACIFIC ARE AT THE RISK FROM TSUNAMIS.TSUNAMI WAVES CAN BE AS HIGH AS 30 METRES AND CAN TRAVEL UPTO 10,000 KM AI VELOCITIES EXCEEDING 800 KM PER HOUR.THE HAWAII ISLANDS IN THE USA HAVE WITNESSNED THE LARGEST NUMBER OF TSUNAMIS.IN THE 20th CENTURY NEARLY 40 TSUNAMIS STRUCK THE ISLAND.ABOUT 1,000 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED IN THE LAST DECADE.ANOTHER EXAMPLE IS OF THE ASIAN TSUNAMI WHICH ORIGINATED NEAR SUMATRA ISLAND ON 26 DECEMBER 2004. IT CREATED HAVOC IN DENSELY POPULATED EASTERN COASTAL AREAS OF INDIA,ISLANDS OF JAVAAND SUMATRA IN INDONESIA,MALAYSIA AND SRI LANKA. Sunami

Slide 7:

PRECAUTION AGAINST TSUNAMI PREPEARE A PLAN OF THE EVACUATION ROUTE FROM YOUR HOUSE,SCHOOL OR WORKPLACE AND FIND AN AREA OF 30m ABOVE SEA LEVEL. KNOW THE HEIGHT OF YOUR STREET ABOVE THE SEA LEVEL AND DISTANCE FROM THE COAST.THE AREAS OF GREAT RISK ARE LESS THAN 10m AND WITHIN 2km FROM THE COASTLINE. IN SOME CASES THE SEA WATER MAY RECEDE UPTO 800m FROM THE COAST. DO NAOT ENTER THIS TEMPORARILY DRY AREA,AS SEA WATER MAY COME BACK SOON. LISTEN TO THE RADIO OR WATCH TELEVISION FOR THE WARNING AND ADVICES.

Slide 8:

VOLCANIC ERUPTION A VOLCANO IS THE ERUPTION OF MAGMA(MOLTEN ROCK)THAT REACHES THE EARTH’S SURFACE THROUGH A CENTRAL VENT OR A LONG CRACK OR (FISSURE)IN THE EARTH’S CRUST.VOLCANIC ACTIVITIES RELEASE DEBRIS,LIQUID LAVA.SEVENTY(70)PERCENT OF THE ACTIVE VOLCANOES ARE LOCATED IN OR AROUND THE PACIFIC OCEAN.WHEN TWO PLATES COLLIDE DUE TO TECTONIC OR OTHER DISTURBANCES BENEATH THE EARTH CRUST IT LEADS TO THE VOLCANIC ERUPTION.THE ERUPTION OF A VOLCANO ALSO RELEASES OXIDES OF CARBON,SULPHUR,NITROGEN AND WATER VAPOUR.IT CAN BE FURTHER EXPLAINED BY MY NEXT IMAGE

Slide 9:

PRECAUTIONS AGAINST VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS EVACUATE AT ONCE,ESPECIALLY WHEN YOUR HOME IS LOCATED WITHIN A FEW KILOMETRES OF VOLCANO. BEWARE OF VOLCANIC DEBRIS-WHEN THE VOLCANO FINALLY ERUPTS,IT MAY EMIT VOLCANIC DEBRIS. BE PREPARED TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE FALLING ROCKS AND SMALL STONES FROM THE CRATER OF THE VOLCANO. MAKE REGULAR UPDATES WITH THE VOLCANIC MONITORING CENTRE. PREPARE GAS MASKS BECAUSE THE VOLCANIC ERUPTIONMAY ALSO BE ACCOMPANIED BY FOUL ODOUR COMING FROM THE RELEASE OF SULFUR. BEWARE OF VOLCANIC LAVA-LAVA IS THE CENTERPIECE OF THE VOLCANO.IT IT ALSO THE MOST DESTRUCTIVE MATERIAL THE VOLCANO WILL PRODUCE.

Slide 10:

Floods Floods generally occur due to heavy rainfall, or when river water flows beyond its normal course. The most common type of flood occurs , when a river overflows its banks and water spreads on the surrounding land. It can also be caused due to- Blocking of river channels due to landslides. Strong tides and storm in the sea. Cyclones and tsunami. Change in the course of a river. Fault design of embankments, canals or dams. Deforestation India has experienced more floods than any other part of the world. Floods are more frequent in the northern India than in southern India.

Slide 11:

PRECAUTIONS AGAINST FLOOD Know the routes and locations of safe shelters. Listen to the radio and watch television for warning advice. Keep the first aid ready, especially for diarrhoea and snake bites. Keep strong ropes for tying things. Keep adequate stock of freshwater, food articles, etc. Keep bamboo sticks to ward off snakes. Do not enter the areas of unknown depth. Switch off power and electrical appliances.

Slide 12:

CONCLUSION SO,AT LAST AFTER PRESENTING THE PROJECT I WOULD LIKE TO CONCLUDE BY SAYING THAT IF THERE ARE DISASTERS OCCURING IN THE WORLD THER MAY BE SOME OR THE OTHER PRECAUTIONS TO PROTECT OURSELVES FROM THEM.SO,AWARE YOURSELF AS WELL AS PROTECT YOUR ENVIRONMENT…………………………………
